Shady forests and open farmland with views over the Hunsrück heights, the Wildenburg towering above Kempfeld, and the Idar Forest dominate the route. The hiker receives detailed information about the ironworks dynasty of the Stumm family, whose roots lie in the heart of the Hunsrück.
Along the route, signs inform about the Stumm family dynasty. Johann Nikolaus Stumm learned the blacksmith trade, beginning a family and company history spanning more than six generations in the ironworks industry.
Along the way, the hiker encounters old tunnels and spoil heaps on the valley slopes. There are also remains of smaller ore smelters and water-powered gemstone grinding mills and hammer works that recall the formerly active mining activity at the southern edge of the Hunsrück. On the bank of the Hammerbach, the first iron hammer by Johann Nikolaus Stumm was built in 1715. Two more hammer works were located at the Asbach Ironworks, which is now a facility of the Diakonie with residential and work opportunities. Various viewpoints offer distant views to the Wildenburg, across the Hunsrück heights or to the Idar Forest. Passing the Historic Biehl Water Grinding Mill (visit possible), you return to the starting point Camping Harfenmühle with gastronomy and accommodation options.

Roadbook
The hike on the Stumm Ironworks Route leads to the traces of the former global company, whose origins lie in the Hellertshausen district of Hammerbirkenfeld. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Stumm family owned four ironworks, 13 hammer mills, and two cutting works in the Hunsrück. After relocating to Saarland, where they acquired the Neunkirchen Ironworks in 1806, Stumm AG was counted among Germany's largest mining companies until the 1970s.
The very varied and distinctly nature-oriented premium circular hiking route leads through idyllic forests in the first third, where some old tunnels draw attention to the region’s mining past. Especially between Asbach and Weiden, magnificent wide views enrich the open field passages before the route passes through attractive forest to the nature refuge at Schinderhannesfels. The circular trail continues entertainingly with wonderful views over Klingenberg back into the valley, where a special highlight, the Biehl Water Grinding Mill, awaits the hiker.

Our tips for carefree hiking enjoyment
Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and the right shoes, it’s twice as much fun. Functional clothing, trekking poles, and breathable backpacks are comfortable while hiking. However, good shoes are essential. Robust jogging or casual shoes are only suitable for short distances on flat paths. For longer trails, we recommend sturdy hiking boots with a grippy, non-slip sole. Also remember sun protection and bring a drink. One liter of water is ideal.
