The historic, water-driven gemstone grinding mill has been run by the same family for 4 generations. Visitors learn how the grinder used to grind agates and other gemstones while lying on a tilting chair. Closed on Wednesdays, except on holidays. Telephone registration required at + 49 6786-1505.
Historic Watermill Biehl, Asbacherhütte In contrast to the loop of the Idar Pond, this historic watermill in Achat is a completely atypical watermill. It is actually a former gypsum mill that was converted into a flour mill around 1880. Unlike many historic mills that are mainly used for tourist purposes, the watermill in Asbach is still a genuine production site today. Visitors can still experience traditional grinding techniques.
Ernst Biehl junior, for example, generates his own electricity with the help of a water wheel. An almost 100-year-old generator producing 100 volts of direct current is powered by the gear wheel. The gemstones are still processed very vividly by lying on the traditional tilting chair, allowing the grinder to press the gemstone firmly against the rotating grinding stone as needed. A smoked bacon rind serves as a support for the axis of this stone. Tip: Technology enthusiasts will find an original light bulb from Edison here, which is still in operation.

Daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Closed on Wednesdays (except on holidays and during school vacations)
The last guided tour takes place at 5:00 p.m.
Duration of the guided tour: approx. 30 minutes.
Guided tours and exhibitions are only available by prior telephone reservation.
