The wine village of Schönau lies on the western edge of the Vienna Basin, without being part of the Lower Austrian Pre-Alps. As a result, the hikes in the municipality have very little elevation gain and can generally be described as leisurely, short circular tours. Schönau is famous for the natural jewel "Schönauer Teiche", a natural monument with a rich bird life, as well as for Schönau Castle with its historic park and the "Temple of the Night" (only partially accessible). You can also visit the local history museum and the baroque parish church of St. Andrew. After the hikes, a number of wine taverns and inns invite you to take a break.

This leisurely and short hiking loop on mostly good paths initially leads out of the village to the Wiener Neustadt Canal. The cycle path and the canal are crossed underneath on a small path (don't miss it!). You then continue along the western embankment of the canal with beautiful views of the foothills of the Alps as far as the dominating Schneeberg. Field paths take you to the village of Leobersdorf, where you continue along the edge of the generation park (children's playground) towards Dornau. Here you should visit the Dornau art mill. The way back then leads initially through alluvial forest and finally back to the village of Schönau.

    Roadbook

From the starting point at the municipal office or the center of Schönau (Karl Gruber Platz), turn onto Liechtensteinstraße and follow it straight for 450 m toward the cemetery. Before reaching the cemetery, turn right through the small park and follow the sign for “Radweg Triestingau, No. 9a” until you reach Dornauer Weg (sign for “Fußweg nach Dornau und Siebenhaus”). Continuing straight ahead will take you to the outskirts of Schönau. Here begins a straight, 550-meter-long gravel path that, lined with an avenue of birch trees, leads directly to the Thermenradweg and the Wiener Neustadt Canal.

Once you reach the embankment with EuroVelo No. 9, turn right toward the large wooden bike path bridge. Just before the bridge, a path on the right leads down to the Triesting River, and you’ll walk along a narrow trail that passes under both the bike path and the canal. Then, walk briefly up the embankment along a meadow path, and you’ll find yourself on the west side of the canal. Enjoy the beautiful view across the fish ponds to the Alpine foothills and all the way to the Schneeberg. Stay on the meadow path for 500 m as it runs along the canal (the old path at the base of the embankment is fenced off), and at the end of the fence (near the gate), descend across a meadow embankment to the sandy roads. Here, take the gravel road heading west (toward the Südbahn) along the fish ponds, go under the Südbahn at the underpass, and continue straight ahead toward Leobersdorf. This brings you directly to the Triestingtalbahn, which you cross via a small footbridge. You are now back in the village of Leobersdorf; turn right onto Raiffeisengasse and then Franz-Wengergasse to return to the Generationenpark (footbridge over the Triesting).

On the promenade, immediately after the footbridge, turn right and follow the left bank of the Triesting along the Generationenpark on a wide gravel path downstream until you reach a sharp left turn. Shortly after the curve, just before a sign reading “Generationenpark,” a narrow path branches off to the right; this gravel path leads through a ditch to Trauttmansdorffstraße, which you’ll reach at the Dornauer Stub’n (wine tavern). Continue briefly along Trauttmansdorffstraße until you reach Dornauerstraße. Turn right onto this street, cross a bridge and the railroad tracks, and continue straight ahead until you reach the “Kunstmühle Dornau” (restaurant). Here, turn left onto the footpath toward Schönau and follow the path, initially along the edge of the forest, to the Südbahn railway line, where a small underpass leads beneath the tracks. From here, the path runs through the riparian forest along the Mühlbach until it reaches the Wiener Neustädter Canal.
