Touristik & Freizeit Sankt Wendeler Land
Experience the history of the Celts, charcoal burners, and smelters up close on the Dollberg Loop. On this route, you will discover the largest ironworks in the Hunsrück from the 17th century, the largest drinking water reservoir in Rhineland-Palatinate, and one of the largest Celtic fortifications in Europe.
Above the Köhlerhütte is the entrance to the path. Shortly after the start, the first highlight of the route: the Züscher Hammer, which has been documented since 1627. Demonstrations take place in the reconstructed hammer mill powered by water.
Along the Altbach stream, you reach the Nonnweiler reservoir. With a volume of 20 million cubic meters of water and a surface area of about 1 square kilometer, the reservoir is the largest drinking water reservoir in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate.
From the lakeside path, it goes to the Archaeology and Celtic Park. The Celtic village Otzenhausen at the foot of the ring fort is surrounded by a sturdy wooden palisade.
The following longer ascent leads partly through a sea of rocks and boulders. Soon you can see the outskirts of the refuge castle. The ring fort is one of the most impressive prehistoric fortifications in Europe.
The main wall was larger than any other Celtic defensive wall at the time. With walls over 10 meters high, reinforced, and an average width of 40 meters, the wall still impresses to this day.
Along the Dollberg ridge, the path passes old boundary stones. On the last section, you inconspicuously cross the border between the federal states of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate.
The route was rated with 70 experience points by the German Hiking Institute.

Celtic Ring Fort Otzenhausen: one of the most impressive Celtic fortifications in Europe. Built in the first century BC, the ten-meter-high walls still bear witness to this monumental monument today. Ongoing excavations, regular guided tours, workshops, and archaeological seminars invite you to visit Otzenhausen. Recent research suggests that the ring fort was a fortified settlement or oppidum, probably the ancestral seat of a Treveri prince.
Züscher Hammer: Here you have the opportunity to experience a reconstructed hammer mill driven by water power. Exhibits on iron processing can also be viewed. The facility's supervisors can explain the site and operate the hammer mill. (Information: 06503-809500 or -2180).

Attention:
Entering the forest and walking the hiking trails is fundamentally at your own risk!
Due to seasonal and weather conditions, increased surefootedness is required on some sections. Please wear clothing and hiking boots appropriate for the season and weather with suitable tread. Caution is advised due to breaking branches and damaged trees. In strong winds and in winter due to snow and ice, there is an increased danger from falling trees and broken canopy parts.

Roadbook
The starting point of the route is the Köhlerhütte at the foot of the Dollbergs. From here, the path initially leads southwest along the forest edge above Neuhütten. After a short forest section, the L 166 is crossed, and the path turns north. Over meadows, we descend into the valley of the Altbach. We follow the stream through the narrow valley, cross the water over a newly built wooden bridge, and walk a bit through the forest. Shortly after, we reach the industrial monument "Züscher Hammer." This ironworks was the largest of its kind in the Hunsrück in the 17th century. Driven by the water of the Altbach, the hammer can today be made to "strike" again for demonstrations. We continue to follow the stream and pass the forebay of the Nonnweiler reservoir. Shortly after, we see the reservoir. The lake, with an area of one square kilometer, is an important drinking water reservoir. About 2 km are walked along the southern lakeside path, which is broadly expanded here. After a large loop, our path leaves the lakeshore. We walk past the natural monument Kloppbruchswiese and circle the eponymous Kloppbruch pond on a narrow path. Then we reach the Hunnenring Otzenhausen forest parking lot, which can also be chosen as the starting point of the route. We cross the L 147. On the other side of the street, a 2.5-hectare Celtic park with Celtic museum and information center is being built (construction time until 2014). We continue on a forest path that initially ascends only slightly and reach the Mannfelsen, a high wall of Taunus quartzites. Here begins a steep climbing section over rocks up to the Celtic ring fort. Along the way, a sensory bench offers a wonderful view of the reservoir. On this strenuous ascent, about 200 meters of elevation are overcome. The path leads right through the height fortification, which was built in the 1st century BC as one of the most important Celtic fortifications or oppida in Europe. The ring fort, built with 240,000 cubic meters of stones, is preserved up to about 10 meters high and can be walked on today. Numerous information boards take us back 2500 years. We leave the site over the mighty north wall and reach the Dollberg ridge over a gently ascending forest path. After a long straight section, we turn sharply left and return after 800 m to the Köhlerhütte, our starting point.
