With the municipal reform of 1974, the villages Königsbach and Stein were merged into the municipality of Königsbach-Stein. To prevent the old boundaries between the villages from falling completely into oblivion, a hiking trail was marked along the district boundary of Stein.
The old market village Stein was a major trading post for various goods and commerce in the Middle Ages. Until the municipal reform, Stein was considered one of the largest districts in the former district of Pforzheim, now Enzkreis, but with a significantly different geographical extent.
