Safety information
Note: The originally planned route through the Burgstalltobel is currently not possible due to a landslide. The route described here already shows the detour: a wonderful hike from the outskirts of Sonthofen via the Fluhenstein castle ruins, back through the Burgstalltobel ravine to Burgberg and the Burgberg ruins.Tips and suggestions
The buildings of the Fluhenstein castle ruins were originally built by Oswald von Heimenhofen in 1361 as a high castle, from which Sonthofen and the surrounding rural communities were administered for almost 300 years. Georg the Elder von Heimenhofen finally sold the castle to the Augsburg Abbey in 1477, which established an official residence there for the respective bailiff. Under Bishop Friederich von Zollern, the castle was extended to the north around 1500. As a result of the sieges and plundering by rebellious peasants (1525) and the Swedish army (1632 and 1633), several repairs were carried out in 1572 and in the 18th century. In 1769, the last Ammann left the castle to move into the new castle in Sonthofen. A few years later, a building survey described the castle as a vacant building with 31 rooms spread over four floors. The castle was finally abandoned in 1808 when the Bavarian state sold the ruins. Today it is privately owned. The ruins of Burgberg were first mentioned in a document in 1102 as the seat of the nobles and knights of Burgberg as "Burg am Bergnach". The municipality of Burgberg, which gave the castle its name, has a varied history, particularly in terms of ownership. The castle burned down during the Thirty Years' War and has since fallen into disrepair. The castle ruins, which were carefully restored between 1992 and 1997 with minimal intervention, are one of the first model restorations in the Allgäu. A visit to the site, which is always open to the public, gives you a taste of Burgberg's history and an impression of the castle's original size.
Roadbook
When you reach the road to Unterried/Breiten, turn left slightly uphill to Unterried, where a field path turns left at the chapel in the direction of Oberried, which you initially follow uphill. Keep left at the second fork in the road, from there it goes downhill to Berghofen. In Berghofen, turn right and follow the Burgweg to the St. Leonhard branch church with the famous winged altar by Hans Strigel the Elder. Pass the church on the right and take a dirt track to the toll road towards Berghofer Wald. Turn left and walk downhill to the Sonthof district of Winkel. Walk through this village by keeping to the right. On the small local road you will reach the Burgberg cemetery after about 10 minutes and Burgberg after another 5 minutes.
At Heimenhofenstraße, turn right into the village until you reach the road "Am Bichel". Turn right uphill and follow the signs for "Ruine Burgberg". Walk through a cattle gate below a pasture directly towards the ruins. Information about the ruins can be found on the information board. After the visit, walk back the same way, but then turn right into Blumenstraße. At the end of this road, cross the main road and take the road "Am Priel", which turns into a field and hiking trail. Follow the signs for "Erzflöße" and you will come to a nursery in this part of Burgberg. Keep right before the main road and shortly afterwards you will come back to the Ostrach bridge and your starting point.
