Günther Weinert
The Berwartstein is managed, a visit is worthwhile. Below Drachenfels Castle is the Drachenfels hut (starting point), which only serves food on certain days. Another inn on the hiking trail is the Weißensteiner Hof.
Near these two historic castles there are other castles worth exploring: northeast the castle Lindelbrunn, northwest the castle group near Dahn and southwest the castles Wegelnburg, Hohenburg, Löwenstein and Fleckenstein.
Many castles here in the Wasgau are connected by the hiking trail "Felsenland Sagenweg". For example, the circular hike that runs between the German-French border and allows the visit of the castle group Wegelnburg, Hohenburg, Löwenstein and Fleckenstein. Furthermore, the hike passes a historic mine that can be visited. The starting point of this circular hike is the town of Nothweiler, about 9 km from the Berwartstein. You can find the tour "Nothweiler - 4 castles and 1 mine" under the keyword "Wanderfex".

Roadbook
From the starting point, the Drachenfels hut, you can follow the well-marked hiking trail "Felsenland Sagenwelt". It leads you to the Berwartstein and then curves on to the viewing area of the rocks at Heidenberg. The trail sign shows a small ghost on a blue background (picture 12). After about 7 km on this trail, you reach a forest clearing from which you can see the rocks of Schlüsselsfels and Buchkammer (Heidenberg). There you turn sharply to the right and hike north towards Weißensteiner Hof.
At the familiar trail junction, turn left and follow the trail sign "Busenberger Wooden Shoe Path" up to the rocks/viewpoints "Schlüsselsfelsen" and "Buchkammer" and then back down the mountain to the starting point.
You can visit the Drachenfels ruins before or after the hike. Exploring the rock castle requires sturdy footwear and sure-footedness.
Southeast of the Berwartstein there is a bathing lake.
