Once there were seven brickyards in the small village of Deetz on the Havel. Millions of clay bricks set out from here in the 19th century to be used in tenement houses and factories in the growing metropolis of Berlin. In addition to the charming landscape, you can discover a piece of Havelland industrial history. 📜
From the village church, with the stork's nest on the roof, you quickly walk out of the village along the old village street towards the Havel. Along the Havel dike, the wide river landscape opens up to the eye of the wandering observer. The river winds leisurely through the quiet, open landscape over which the cormorants fly croaking. At the Deetzer Ablage, a sandbank feared by skippers, bathers benefit from the washed-up sand. The Havel bathing area has an especially shallow entry. 🏖️
You now leave the Havel behind and walk back a bit to Deetz before the path leads along an old pollard willow alley. At the next junction stands an old tipping barge that was used to transport clay from the pits outside Deetz. A few steps further is a board with a site plan of the former brickyard, which was in operation at this place until 1960. ℹ️
Not far now and you reach the former clay pits – the Deetzer Erdelöcher. For over a hundred years, clay was extracted in the pits for the surrounding brickyards. Today they are filled with water and form a labyrinth of small and large lakes. Surrounded densely by trees and reeds, they are a paradise for anglers and those seeking relaxation. 🌊
The path winds through this unique water mosaic. On the narrow land between the lakes, there is often just enough space for the hiking trail. Before you reach Deetz again, you escape the labyrinth, and a path lined with pollard willows leads you back into the village. 🚩
