Ferienregion Nördlicher Bodensee Tourist-Information Pfullendorf
The "Bannwald" route is very suitable if you want to see the renaturation measures in the "Oberen Schnöden." It also crosses the largest Bannwald of the state of Baden-Württemberg, covering 441 ha, and at the same time one of the largest contiguous moorland areas in southern Germany.
With 441 hectares of undisturbed forest reserve, the Bannwald Pfrunger-Burgweiler Ried is the largest Bannwald in Baden-Württemberg to date. Different types of forest here are left to develop naturally: peat pines in the raised bog, spruces standing on renatured moor areas that partially die off to make room for other forest types, beech and oak on mineral soil, shrubby vegetation on former bog meadows. The circular route “Bannwald” lets you experience the mosaic of different forest types along with the special diversity of animal, fungus, and plant species up close.
The hiking car park Ulzhausen is a good starting point. The circular route is consistently signposted with “Bannwald,” partly running along the Burgweiler Ried nature trail, and numerous information boards tell of the prehistory, peat use, and renaturation of the bog, as well as flora and fauna.

Tips and suggestions
The Wilhelmsdorf nature conservation center was expanded in May 2012 and features a permanent exhibition with interactive modules on the subject of "Moor." There, the history of the Pfrunger-Burgweiler Ried, its flora and fauna, as well as the renaturation measures are explained. More information about the nature conservation center or the protected area can be found at www.pfrunger-burgweiler-ried.de.
Roadbook
From the car park in Ulzhausen, walk past the extensive grazing with Scottish Highland cattle towards Fünfeckweiher. The path leads onto a boardwalk with a platform at Fünfeckweiher, where rare bird species can be observed. A few meters further, cross the Tiefenbach, where you can inspect the renaturation measures in the "Oberen Schnöden." Then you walk along a forest path to the platform in the Bannwald, where you can observe its changes based on a photo from 2012. After a further short stretch on a boardwalk, you reach the 38.8 m high Bannwald tower. Here you turn left onto a gravel path. This is also called the "Weiter Riedweg" and leads to Burgweiler. After this path, you pass the castle ruins and return to the car park at Ulzhausen via the Burgweiler Ried nature trail.
