Walter Biselli
Distantly visible volcanic mountains shape the landscape of the Hegaualb. The local poet Ludwig Finckh therefore also called the Hegau "Des Herrgotts Kegelspiel" (God's bowling game). This can be particularly well overlooked from the Witthoh, a viewpoint mountain south of Tuttlingen. In the southeast is Lake Constance with the Überlinger and Zeller lakes, between them the Bodanrück, to the west the Black Forest with the Feldberg. In Föhn weather conditions, the wide panorama of the Alps from the Zugspitze to the Bernese Oberland can also be seen.
In a splendid location, the Chapel "St. Johannes and Jakobus am Witthoh" was built in 2003. The builder was Prof. Dr. Michael Ungethüm, the then CEO of Aesculap AG.
At Lohhof is a historic border stone. The "Lachenden Stein" separated the three counties Hohenberg, Fürstenberg, and Nellenburg. Until 1952, this was the state border between Württemberg and Baden, today the border of the municipalities Tuttlingen-Möhringen and Emmingen ab Egg as well as Hattingen. A second stone commemorates the miller Andreas Storz from Rosenfeld near Balingen, who was robbed and murdered here on April 26, 1794.
As a protective blessing against the plague, the Pestkreuze were erected around 1630 at Emmingen ab Egg at the four village exits – perhaps also as a plague warning for hikers.

Roadbook
The starting point of the scenic circular hike is the Windegg hiking car park on the Witthoh, from which the panorama of the Alps is already visible.
The Black Forest Club signpost points with the yellow lozenge to "Mühlebol." We hike with a view on natural paths and turn right at the location "Mühlebol" onto the connecting road from Windegg to Hattingen. In the immediate vicinity of the location "Kirchstraße" is the bus stop "Gasthof Kreuz," opposite the Gasthof Ochsen. Before that, we turn right to the church of Hattingen.
Beyond the end of the village, we already see the chapel "St. Johannes and Jakobus am Witthoh" from the signpost "Schlutt." The route goes viewfully with the yellow lozenge as the trail marking on the height. The Witthoh transmitter also shows the way. At the forest edge, we go right to the former diabetic children's home Witthoh. Here, places for the accommodation of 160 refugees have now been created.
From the Riedhof, we look at the well chapel belonging to the farm and could already reach the mountain inn Witthoh in one kilometer by turning right here.
If the previous round is too short for you, go straight ahead in the direction of Brunnenkapelle and along the forest edge to Rabenhof and Lohhof. On the right side, we see the "Lachenden Stein" in the field. Before Lohhof, we turn left and immediately right again to the Württemberger Hof. In front of this, the path once again bends south (Baden) to the Pestkreuzen above Emmingen. From here, the path leads us past the Witthoh transmitter back to the starting point.
The mountain inn Witthoh invites you to stop for a meal at the end of the hike. From here, we can once again enjoy the magnificent panorama of the Hegau mountains and, in good visibility, the distant view of the Alps.
