alpannonia® light 12. circular route: Nature, art, wine, panorama (Kőszeg)
Our tour invites you for a comfortable walk beside the town yet in nature. On the nearly 5 km loop, you get a taste of Kőszeg’s essence. Everyone can choose according to their interests among the natural, historical, and artistic values - and soon we will enrich the experience with gastronomic delights.
You can enjoy a magnificent panorama at the Szulejmán lookout towards the city and at the Trianon Cross towards present-day Austria; meanwhile, you can choose abundantly from historical and artistic memorials.
During the walk, we also get close to nature, as we explore the wild Ördögárok and get to know the characteristic rock type of the Kőszeg Mountains: shiny phyllite formed in the Mesozoic era and metamorphosed during the Alpine orogeny. According to plans, an educational trail will soon guide us through this gorge, rich in special rocks and with a cool climate.
When we reach the vineyards, on the left side you can see the building of the Cooperatives of Grape Growers and Wine Sellers - descendants of former poncichter miners - with a cellar soon to open where wine tastings will be organized. It is planned that over time, we will savor the "juice of the mountain" in more and more cellars.
Among the orchards - depending on the season - we can taste some fruit from the roadside trees; under the forest, we can feel the power and scent of the community of trees.

Details about the route
Starting from the crown-guarding bunker, after a few meters on Kálvária Street, turn right, then follow the signs to turn left onto a footpath! Upon reaching Erdő Street, turn right. Passing by the Kincs villa, we quickly find a wild natural treasure outside the town: this is the Ördögárok, a protected geological value. Admiring the folded pelitic metamorphic rocks - which will soon be introduced by an educational trail as well - you can sense the many millions of years of history.
At the next stop, look into the distance! Following the signs, we take a short detour left from Ördögárok to the Szulejmán lookout, from where you can discover Kőszeg’s historic buildings along with related historical curiosities - and imagine yourself in the place of Sultan Suleiman for a moment.
Returning to Ördögárok, we continue left. Soon we reach the vineyards.
From here we walk straight ahead. From the dirt road turning right, there is an excellent panorama of the surroundings.
Before reaching the forest, at the end of the gardens, we must turn right onto the dirt road. At the end of the road, we turn left toward the Trianon Cross and the Vöröskő quarry. On the same section heading back, we reach the Calvary Church. We descend the hill beside the stations of the cross, just a few meters from the crown-guarding bunker.
