Albtalweg - from the Rhine at Maxau to Bad Herrenalb
The Albtalweg offers a lot of variety for hikers along its nearly 40 km length from the Rhine at Maxau to Bad Herrenalb – changing landscapes, nature experiences, and sights. A large part of the route runs close to the Alb River through the Nature Park Black Forest Central/North.
At the beginning near the Rhine, the path leads through agriculturally used land, which transitions into a park-like landscape from the Albhäusle nature friends house onwards. Shady old tree stands along the Alb alternate with sunny sections to linger and enjoy. The path finally runs through the Günther-Klotz-Anlage, a popular recreational area, over Weiherfeld, Rüppurr to Ettlingen, which lies halfway along the route. The old town of Ettlingen with its winding alleys and half-timbered houses is worth a detour.
After Ettlingen, the landscape becomes increasingly typical of the Black Forest and light inclines begin. The path leads through mixed forests, valley meadows, open meadows and pastures – pure nature experience. Equally interesting are the places passed: Marxzell with the transport museum, Frauenalb with its picturesque monastery ruins, as well as Bad Herrenalb with the former Cistercian monastery and its extensive spa park.
The entire 39 km long stretch of the Albtalweg requires about 10 hours of walking. The route can also be comfortably covered in two day stages. Moreover, several entry and exit possibilities can be reached with the S-Bahn.
