On a hike starting from Magyaregregy, located in the eastern corner of the Mecsek, hikers can expect countless sights and exciting adventures. Leaving the small village, you can enjoy the mountain range above the Vár Valley and the view of Máré Castle, then cover kilometers in the magically beautiful Mecsek forests. The “peak” of the hike is indeed the quite difficult-to-walk Sín-gödör, where adventurers can experience a real challenge. On our hike, we visit the Barna-kő rock linked to 'Eger Stars', and also the less frequented and well-known Somosi and Nyomákói Stream's beautifully picturesque valleys. Varied terrain, enchanting forests, and significant elevation changes make our hike even more exciting.
The detailed description of the route can be read under the Route Description menu.
Author’s recommendation
- The Sín-gödör stream usually has abundant water, but it swells further during snowmelt and rainy periods, so it is advisable to set off in waterproof hiking boots; rubber boots may also come in handy at such times. Do not start the Sín-gödör hike during long-lasting heavy rain!
- It is recommended to plan the hike from late autumn to early spring, because in the summer the forest along the trail becomes overgrown in many places, making progress even more difficult.
- During the tour, we come across several springs, whose water can be safely drawn from to refresh ourselves and refill our bottles.

Detailed description of the route
After getting off the bus, we start our hike at the P+ trail coming from Szászvár. Leaving the shop, pub, and cemetery behind, we head west along Zrínyi Street. We pass by the school building and after a few hundred meters our path bends right. We leave the village at a large agricultural building on the left, ascending along the cart road past fields and meadows. From the hilltop, there is a beautiful view of the Vár Valley, the distant Máré Castle, and the ridges and peaks of the Eastern Mecsek. Leaving the gentle meadows behind, we enter the vast Pap Forest. We meet a beautiful forest environment and walk together for some distance on the P trail. We climb up through beech woods, leaving behind Kis-kút-orma when we turn onto the left branch of the Z trail coming from Kisbattyán. We descend a steep path to the Völgységi Stream winding through the Egregy Valley, where we spot Barna-kő rock, well known from the novel 'Eger Stars' - with a little adventure, we can explore the rocky hillside nearby, which hides a small cave.
From the top of the Barna-kő rock formation, Father Gábor and Gergely Bornemissza watched the Turkish Sultan's army march in the Gárdonyi novel titled 'Eger Stars'. Nearby, we find a cave that locals call the Zsivány Cave.
Crossing the stream and the country road, we leave the ascending Z trail and turn onto the P● trail, continuing along the valley. After leaving a small clearing, we pass beside a rocky hillside and cross the stream again. On a nearly pathless trail, we enter the gorge – our true wild adventure begins here. Jumping from rock to rock in or beside the stream bed, we move forward. We leave a nice small waterfall behind, followed by gurgling sounds on mossy rocks, as the stream winds in an S-shape. On this section, we cross the stream many times and climb over fallen tree trunks in several places. The beaver-dam-like wood debris and small gravel banks prove the power of the water. After about one kilometer, the valley widens and becomes gentler, and we are crossed by the S+ trail, which leads from Máré Castle toward the Hidasi Valley. We continue through the dense thicket along the winding stream valley. At the end of the valley, we find the small spring of Szederindás Well, where after a short rest we change trail.
The P● trail goes right toward the Hidasi Valley; we take the left branch of the Z+ trail, splitting in a wedge shape. We climb steeply by a cart road to the ridge, where we meet the Z trail and continue together to the right. After a few hundred meters, we leave the cart road and the Z trail, turning left again into the forest.
We descend through a very atmospheric beech forest to a forestry road running along the Vár Valley; we turn left here, but after a few steps turn right into the charming Somosi Valley. Our valley adventure doesn't last long, as on a narrow path we leave the stream valley to the left and climb steeply out of the “pit”. At a wildlife feeder, we meet the S+ trail and continue right together. The S+ trail soon separates from our path, and we descend steeply on the “wavy” forest cart road to the Nyomákói Well flowing in the hillside of the valley. From the small spring, we reach the clearing of the Vörösfenyő hostel within 10 minutes, where we can linger for a while.
Leaving the junction of hiking trails and the idyllic small clearing behind to the west along the S◼ trail, we wander a bit in the wild valley of the Nyomákói Stream crossing our path. Then we climb onto a cart road turning right. We descend steeply through a beautiful forest, passing by the trickling Gerda Spring, and after about half an hour's walk from the beautiful valley, we emerge at the Egregy country road. Turning left, after 200 meters we arrive at the entrance of the Vár Valley, where we can take a bus towards Komló, Pécs, or Bonyhád.
