This route is also suitable for less sporty hikers and links the visit to the famous pilgrimage church of Montecastello di Tignale with an incredible view of Lake Garda.
Even those of us accustomed to the views of Lake Garda were enchanted by the magnificent panorama from Monte Cas across the entire lake, from Torbole to Sirmione, and from Monte Baldo in its entirety. The route takes less than two hours: take your time to take photos and enjoy the view calmly; it is really worth it.

Pilgrimage Church Madonna di Montecastello
The pilgrimage church of the Madonna di Montecastello is the most important building in Tignale and stands on a limestone rock overlooking the lake at 691 m. It was built in the Middle Ages on the ruins of an ancient temple. According to legend, the first small church was erected after a shining apparition in the year 1200 ended a battle between Trento and Brescia. It is also called the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Stella. For this reason, the interior of the church is decorated with a beautiful starry sky and houses various frescoes as well as the largest votive offering in Europe from the year 1600, depicting the capture of the bandit Zanzanù. The fresco behind the main altar, showing Jesus crowning his mother, dates from the 14th century and is a work from the school of Giotto.
Big Bench
In front of the sanctuary, you will find Big Bench number 238 of the non-profit Big Bench Community Project, which promotes the installation of oversized benches to help support local communities, tourism, and handicrafts in the countries where they are installed. The giant benches are often known from pictures, but when you sit on one and enjoy the view as if you were 'a child again,' you have an intense experience to share with others. The benches are meant for relaxing, as opposed to a chair or armchair they are wide enough to accommodate several friends at the same time.
Roadbook
From the parking lot on the SP38 country road, walk along the road for about 5 minutes until you reach a row of larches on the right side of the path, which gently goes uphill. The ground is grassy and not clearly distinguishable from the surrounding meadow; when we passed by, there were no signs. If you come to a picnic table, you have just passed the fork, so walk back a few steps.
Follow the simple path through the forest until you cross the access road to the sanctuary. There you will find some beautifully painted chapels of the Way of the Cross. Continue on the footpath along the concrete road until you pass the entrance gate and reach the clearing in front of the pilgrimage church. For fans of Big Benches, there is one of these giant benches in the small garden to the right of the sacred building, overlooking the southern Lake Garda.
Take time to visit the pilgrimage church and enjoy the characteristic views from the right side over the lake and Monte Baldo.
After your visit, go back outside and stay on the square to the right, following the signposted path 266 towards Monte Cas and the cross. Along the way, you will find several signs illustrating the character of the artillery positions built during the First World War on Monte Cas to defend the Italian front, which you will come across on the way.
Passing the Casa della Spiritualità (House of Spirituality), continue on a gently ascending asphalt road and then on a beautiful path through the forest, which smells of pine and offers views of the lake and the pilgrimage church. From the church, it is about 100 m uphill. After about 20 minutes, leave the main path and turn left onto a small path leading into the forest, which is not signposted.
You reach the cross and a truly incredible panoramic balcony at 779 m above sea level. The view of the lake and Monte Baldo fills eyes and heart; the emotions left by this wonder of nature are truly strong. The plateau of Tignale and Tremosine with their steep cliffs overlooking the lake, the endless shades of blue and green of the water, the lake which looks like a fjord in the north and a wide basin in the south, Monte Baldo with its mountain ridges, the villages on the coast inviting you to recognize them one by one.
We then keep left and pass the balustrade to continue the descent into the forest. At the crossroads, keep left (not towards Campione) and walk on a beautiful field path downhill until you meet the SP38 hiking path, which you follow back to the car.
