A Journey with Poets and Herbs
The Poets' Grove on the Zammelsberg, at an elevation of 1,114 meters above sea level, is one of the most magnificent places in Carinthia, both in terms of scenery and cultural significance. Starting from Weitensfeld, the herbal theme is fittingly incorporated into the experience.
The hike begins at the parking lot of the therapy center and follows the Herb Trail for the first part; at the Zammelsberger State Road, shortly after the climb begins, the “Alte Zammelsbergerstraße”—a steadily ascending sunken path—branches off to the left. The trail winds through the shady mountain forest up to the hilltop, crossing the state road several times before finally arriving at the Lenzenkreuz. From here, you can enjoy the view of the Central Carinthia region to the south: the panoramic view stretches from the Saualm over the Petzen and the Karawanken Range all the way to Triglav. The Panoramaweg joins the Dichterweg, where commemorative stones in a small grove honor famous German-speaking and local poets. An extraordinary place for meditation and reflection, where a positive energy is palpable. But for those who’d like to recharge their energy, the Kirchenwirt—just a stone’s throw away—offers a refreshing break from the hike. The descent from the Zammelsberg follows a sunken path through the forest back down into the Gurk Valley; via the Flotthube and the Harder Farm, you reach Weitensfeld. The Gurktalerhof and the Roma Restaurant offer great places to stop for a bite here!
