The Cherle hill, between the upper Val d'Astico and the Fiorentini plateau, is known for the homonymous Austro-Hungarian fortress that occupies its summit and of which only ruins remain today. Although damaged by scrappers and the metal extraction carried out with mines in 1936, the Fort - which the Austro-Hungarians called Werk Sebastiano - still stands in all its extension and grandeur. Around it stretch wide pastures and a lush forest of red firs.

The beauty of this route lies in the destination, Forte Cherle, from the top of which there is a wide panorama over the eastern part of Alpe Cimbra, over Mount Cornetto and Bècco di Filadonna. It is also in the characteristic village of Tézzeli, the Venetian sawmill of Mein, the area of San Fermo (the disappeared village) and the remains of the Great War (1914-1918) that can be visited around the Fort: the famous Scala dell'Imperatore, the former military cemetery and the remains of the military hospital of Val Fredda.
Author’s recommendation
The section from San Fermo to the Fort is quite challenging. It must be tackled gradually, without jerks.

As you can imagine, the passability of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to current conditions and thus depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may have changed. Before setting off, check the status of the route by contacting the hut manager on your route, the alpine guides, the visitor centers of natural parks and the tourist offices.Roadbook
From the center of San Sebastiano, following the directional signs, we follow the path that takes us into the Télder woods, then to the village of Tézzeli, to the underlying Astico stream, to the nearby Venetian-style hydraulic sawmill (of Mein) and, shortly after, to San Fermo, the place where until 1752 there was a charcoal burners’ village, later destroyed following a sentence issued in the context of the centuries-old border dispute known as Causa Lastarolla. It is also the point where the route climbs the mountain slope and becomes more challenging; it must therefore be tackled calmly and with frequent rest stops. Once at the top, you are immediately in the area of Forte Cherle. Turning left (signs) you ascend the dirt road leading directly to the fortress; turning right you reach the nearby former military cemetery, the Scala dell'Imperatore (beside the SP dei Fiorentini), on top of which lie the remains of what was once the military hospital of Val Fredda. Return is by the same route.
