07 Eastern Austrian Border Trail, E23: Illmitz – Siegendorf
With the (boat) crossing of Lake Neusiedl we leave the Seewinkel – and it becomes a bit hillier.
Illmitz we leave towards Lake Neusiedl, along the cycle path, past the Zicklacke. Through the reed belt we reach the lakeside resort and the boat station. Attention! Check schedules on the internet, the boats do not run year-round! In Mörbisch we get off and enter the village. A first gentle ascent, then we are outside again – and soon have a magnificent view over the lake!
Now there are two possibilities: go to Rust and back a little – or already go left up to the St. Margarethen local mountain. Downhill again on the other side we reach the village and walk to the church. Here turn left, then right again, hike to the pheasantry and along it, later over field paths, to Siegendorf.
(The indicated km include the boat section. Actually, it is 27 km.)
Author’s recommendation
The lake festivals in Mörbisch are a must for operetta fans. Passion plays and opera performances take place in St. Margarethen in the Roman quarry. In the village, you should visit the parish church, where there is also an interesting charnel house.
