Starting the Northern Alpine Trail in Rust is just as beautiful as starting in Perchtoldsdorf. Of course, who doesn't know the view from the vineyards to the lake with its unique reed belt or the picturesque old town with the famous stork nests on the chimneys? Admittedly, the mountains are missing, hills appear repeatedly, but mostly the path is more or less flat and endless. You walk and walk and hardly believe you are making progress. Even the Drassburg forest in the last third of the route with the rather gentle ascent to Marzer Kogel seems endless. Thus, after 33 km with blisters and burning soles, I reach the liberating end of the route, Mattersburg.
