From the remote St. Stefan-Vorderberg train station on the northern edge of the Gailtal valley, we reach the Gail bridge to Vorderberg in just a few minutes. The village remains hidden behind lush valley forest. It's worth taking a look from the bridge: the Gail reveals its character here - crystal-clear water flowing leisurely along, lined on both sides by dense deciduous trees. Terms such as "being in the river", "harmony" and "steadiness" come to mind. On the north bank, we follow the Alpine river, mostly elevated on the embankment, and let its wide meanders carry us downstream through the valley. Soon the valley floor widens and a checkerboard of fields and meadows tells of rural creativity. The rhythm of walking, the special light in the valley and new perspectives invite you to reflect. With the mighty Dobratsch massif in view, we pass the Gail bridge near Nötsch and reach the mouth of the Nötschbach stream. There we follow the course of the stream upwards. We soon reach the Nötsch train station in the village of the same name through a residential area.
Author’s recommendation
Nötsch is known in art circles for the "Nötscher Kreis": An impressionist center was established here in the 1930s. The poetry & colors of the landscape were captured on canvas from a passionate perspective. A secret of inspiration: the special light in the valley!
The MUSEUM of the Nötscher Kreis in the village allows you to immerse yourself in this view of the world. It's well worth a visit!
