Lake Faak is widely known for its turquoise blue, crystal-clear water against the backdrop of the majestic Mittagskogel - a true jewel of Carinthia! From Faak am See station, the trail leads through loosely built-up, rural settlements to the idyllic village pond, the starting point of the Slow Trail. By the way: here we are at the drainage of Lake Faak. The reed beds at the end of the pond extend all the way to the lake and the Seebach stream flows through them in countless meanders - the famous "Everglades of Lake Faak" (see photo bar). The slightly elevated St. George's branch church enchants with its rural idyll and is well worth a short visit. We follow the Faakersee shore road on a footpath only briefly uphill, then immerse ourselves in the atmospheric spruce forests of the area: park-like forest idyll and natural hiking trails delight the heart. We head downhill via the inconspicuous highest point to the beginning of the peninsula and out to its headland on a wonderful forest path close to the shore. A real insider tip! What feels like the middle of the lake opens up dreamy views across the water. A small lake access for swimming does the rest. Perfect for unwinding. The way back is along a quiet forest road - past the federal sports and leisure center - to the Faakersee shore road and along this - with a view of the Mittagskogel - back to Faak am See train station. After crossing the Seebach stream, we walk through the historic center of Faak am See. Hardly noticeable today.
Author’s recommendation
The turquoise Caribbean flair of Lake Faak is created by lime crystals that are washed into the lake. The light scatters on these and the exotic coloration is created. It's exciting how even small things can enrich our lives!
