The Lurnfeld is an extensive mountain basin between the high Reißeck group and the elongated Goldeck massif. The Drauf River meanders through the valley floor, lined by rare gray alder riparian forests, while anatmospheric mosaic of fertile fields stretches out to the side.

From the remote Lendorf railroad station in the middle of the Lurnfeld, we hike along narrow roads to the low forest ridge in the heart of the rural plain. A wonderful hiking trail leads us up to the forest ridge and further up into the shady coniferous forest. Finally, we reach the rural village of St. Peter in Holz on a quiet forest road - a hidden highlight! This is where Teurnia, the flourishing center of the Roman province of Noricum, was once located. The excavation sites and the local Roman museum bring the splendor of this era back to life - so make sure you take the time to visit. Back in the present day, a settlement road leads around theend of the forest ridge down to the rural valley floor.

After a few level meters, a narrow road leads through a country settlement and then up the forest flank of a foothill of the Fratresberg. A wonderful, solitary forest hike over the Fratresberg begins at the saddle. The scent of the coniferous forest, the rhythm of walking ... allow you to switch off and reflect. We cross the highest point, then it's a leisurely descent. From the Ebnerwiese forest settlement, a quiet forest road leads us out to the flank of the Fratresberg, where the edge of the settlement of Spittal an der Drau begins.

After the descent with a beautiful view of the town and Goldeck, Tiroler Straße leads into the historic town center. From the town park onwards, ornate Art Nouveau houses bear witness to the town's heyday as a burgeoning summer resort. The highlight is the magnificent Porcia Castle - one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings north of the Alps! It tells of the glorious era of imperial court culture. The flair of the town is best enjoyed in one of the terrace cafés - so take your time, because the Spittal-Millstättersee train station is not far away.

Spittal an der Drau is a quiet treasure in the Alps in the area of tension between courtly splendor and care. Make sure you take time to discover it! For more information see Rail & Trail "Spittal - courtly splendor & care" (city walk): Here.
