Rail & Trail "High-altitude hiking on the mountain flank of the Gailtal Alps"
We turn west and follow a steep forest path up the mountain flank. "The forest is actually calming, yet your pulse beats fast" - the paradox makes you smile. As the altitude increases, occasional views down into the valley reveal the unique idyll of Lake Presseggersee - the second largest reed bed in Austria, nestled in a hilly valley landscape full of harmony! Once we reach the forest road, we stand above a band of rocky outcrops and have reached the highest point of the tour - our summit, so to speak! Now begins a sublime, gently sloping high-altitude hike in the middle of the flank of the Gailtal Alps. The tranquil mixed mountain forest offers occasional beautiful views. Otherwise, the rhythm of the walk lets your thoughts run free. The mystical Mother of God Rock, a striking rock tower at the edge of the path, is another special feature. From certain perspectives, it resembles a statue of the Virgin Mary. Shortly afterwards, an atmospheric forest path leads down to Brusn-Brünnl.
After a counter-climb, the ruins of Khünburg Castle await us on a hidden ridge - our final highlight! The ancestral castle of the Carinthian aristocratic family was a prestigious aristocratic residence and administrative seat of the surrounding lordship. The renovated keep, now a lookout tower, offers magnificent views of the Gailtal valley.
We descend through atmospheric mixed forest via the Jägersteig trail into the valley. The Vellach-Khünburg train station is not far away. Truly an unusual high-altitude hike!
