The Hagener Hütte (2,446 m) is located on the Mallnitzer Tauern, a once legendary high mountain pass in the Hohe Tauern. For centuries, this pass connected Mallnitz (Carinthia) with Gastein (Salzburg). It was used by the Celts, the Romans built a road, and later muleteers and their goods traveled over the pass. Today it leads us into the magnificent mountain world of the Hohe Tauern.

From Mallnitz-Obervellach railroad station, we cross to the western edge of the flat valley floor and follow the steep forest flank on short tracks and natural paths. Perfect for warming up! Views of the village convey the flair of a lively, rural mountain village. At the entrance to the Tauern Valley, which branches off to the west, we pass the popular BIOS National Park Center. It offers great insights into the fascination of the Hohe Tauern and reminds us that we are in a national park. We soon hike through the meadows on the valley floor, along the meanders of the Mallnitzbach stream, towards the imposing head of the valley - the height of the surrounding mountains is impressive. As the terrain becomes steeper, the path winds its way up through rustic mountain forest. Again and again we come across Roman road construction that has survived the centuries. A bench with a magnificent view of the valley allows us to take a merciful breather. We have reached the tree line at the popular Jamnigalm snack station (1,750 m). The realm of alpine meadows and crags stretches out before us - the high mountains. A gravel road now winds evenly up the mountain flank - thanks to the Romans. The landscape becomes increasingly lonely and the rhythm of the walking makes your thoughts fly - just like the old Tauern crossers. The rustic Tauern cross is a welcome indicator of altitude, after which the old Tauernhaus reminds us of the long mule-trading tradition. Finally, we reach the once legendary Mallnitzer Tauern at the Hagener Hütte (2,446 m). Congratulations!

The crowning glory: an overnight stay at the Hagener Hütte - mountain solitude in the high mountains, alpenglow, magical blue hour. A magnificent Hohe Tauern experience!

The next day we take the same route back to the starting point.
