A fantastic round tour of the peaks with numerous wow moments: the 360° panorama on the Goldeck (2,142 m) in the sea of Alpine peaks, the panoramic high-altitude descent, the Martennock (2,039 m) with a deep view, the boldly situated Goldeckhütte ... - a highlight!

From Spittal-Millstättersee railroad station, we walk through a contemporary settlement area down to the Drau bridge. The now quiet river was an important waterway for centuries, from which Spittal benefited significantly through tolls and rafting rights. On the south bank, rural side roads lead to the valley station of the Goldeck cable car (547 m). The gondola lift takes us comfortably to the top, where the view opens up. The mountain station (1,780 m) welcomes you with a sky-high reservoir and magnificent views of the Hohe Tauern and Nockberge mountains.

Now the fantastic circular hike to the summit begins. The path initially winds its way up the mountain flank through rustic mountain forest, later the trees thin out along a ridge and areas of alpine bush dominate the picture. The view widens as you walk - the tree line is behind us. The final summit assault begins at the Goldalm Mountain Dining (restaurant). Soon we are standing at the summit cross of the Goldeck (2,142 m). Congratulations! The magnificent 360° panorama in the shadow of the 80 m high television transmitter is breathtaking: the Hohe Tauern, the Nockberge, the Karawanken, the Triglav ... - in the middle of a sea of peaks! On the descent, an initially narrow ridge with views down to the right and left leads us into the panorama. Pure high-altitude exhilaration! We reach the Martennock (2,039 m) on the last elevation of the ridge . Congratulations! At around 18 m, it is one of the largest summit crosses in Austria and a surprising highlight. The view down into the Spittal basin is magnificent. We hike over another ridge down to the boldly situated Goldeckhütte. Its terrace with views down into the valley is perfect for a culinary break. On the atmospheric ridge below, we dive back into the rustic mountain forest. After the exciting wow-moments in the high altitudes, the forest now provides a quiet and soothing relaxation. We cross a forest ditch and climb the opposite forest flank back up to the Goldeck cable car mountain station. What a dream tour!

The descent continues along the ascent path back to the starting station

    Author’s recommendation

This tour uses the Goldeck cable car as a comfortable ascent and descent aid - including a magnificent panoramic view. Opening times and information at: www.sportberg-goldeck.com

For connoisseurs: Spittal-Millstättersee train station is well connected by bus to the valley station of the Goldeck cable car, so that the walking time can be easily shortened. For information see "Public transport".
