Rail & Trail "Faaker See highlights - from mountain idyll to lake idyll"
After the descent, we briefly follow the road from the saddle and then hike up the flank of the Karawanken through wonderful spruce forest. "Mountain solitude!" comes to mind. Afterwards, a beautiful panoramic high-level trail leads through a cultivated rural landscape over to the Baumgartnerhöhe (919 m), our second "summit". Congratulations! The Faaker See basin lies at our feet, with the turquoise lake shimmering in the center - a real wow moment. The tasty Carinthian cuisine at the Baumgartnerhof allows us to enjoy this landscape from a culinary perspective.
After a short descent, the event castle ruins of Finkenstein, enthroned on the opposite slope, inspire with their breathtaking mix of landscape scenery, historic walls and art. A final steep forest descent takes us down into the wide valley plain.
Through rural settlements and farmland, we reach the idyllic village pond of Faak am See. The reeds at the end of the pond reach as far as the lake and the Seebach stream flows through them in countless meanders - the famous "Everglades of Lake Faak". The final highlight: a romantic forest path leads to a headland in the middle of the turquoise lake. Dreamy views, a little swimming access ... - a perfect ending! Then we return to Faak am See station.
Author’s recommendation
The turquoise Caribbean flair of Lake Faak is created by lime crystals that are washed into the lake. The light scatters on them and the exotic coloration is created. It's exciting how even small things can enrich our lives!
