Day 1 "Dobratsch 2 days": A crisp, alpine summit tour from Nötsch in the Gailtal valley up to the magnificent 360° panoramic summit of the Dobratsch (2,166 m) - an alpine highlight tour with an overnight stay at the summit!

Right at Nötsch train station (559 m), an impressive view opens up of the mighty Dobratsch massif (2,166 m), whose craggy walls make it seem unapproachable - its summit is our destination! In the flat Gailtal valley floor, we hike through the tranquil country and artists' village of Nötsch towards the mountain. Passing the famous art museum of the Nötsch district, we reach the last houses of the village in the dense spruce forest of the Roter Graben. Here we immerse ourselves in the eternal mountain forests of the Dobratsch. Idyllic forest paths, some of them forest roads, lead us uphill along the western flank of the Dobratsch. At the foot of the steep upswings, we reach the hidden Alplgraben.

Now the summit assault begins! In the shady spruce forest of the ditch, we initially gain altitude in a relaxed manner. After the Kalten Bründl, the terrain becomes noticeably steeper. Finally, narrow serpentines lead up the mountain flank. Above the tree line, we suddenly become aware of the height we have gained and the panorama begins to unfold - the effort of the ascent fades as we enjoy the vastness. A pleasant paradox!

A longer traverse leads to a lofty saddle. There the next wow effect: bold views of the rugged summit walls and magnificent views of Triglav, Mangart & Co! The last 180 vertical meters run over the airy and steep Kuhriegel ridge uphill through rugged alpine meadows. Finally, we stand on the narrow summit ridge by the Maria Himmelfahrt chapel, with the Dobratsch summit cross (2,166 m) behind us. Congratulations! The magnificent 360° panorama, the surrounding peaks and the breathtaking views down to the valley create a feeling of being on top of the world.

The crowning glory: an overnight stay in the Dobratsch Gipfelhaus - solitude on the summit in the evening, alpenglow, magical blue hour, sea of lights in the valley and mystical sunrise. A magnificent mountain experience!

    Author’s recommendation

Nötsch is known in art circles for the "Nötscher Kreis": An impressionist center was established here in the 1930s. The poetry and colors of the landscape were captured on canvas from a passionate perspective. A secret of inspiration: the special light in the valley!

The Maria Himmelfahrt chapel is one of the two Marian shrines on the summit of the Dobratsch and was built by the lord of the Wasserleonburg castle above Nötsch to fulfill a vow.

Spend the night at the summit in the comfortable Dobratsch Summit House. Booking information at www.dobratsch-gipfelhaus.com
