Day 2 "Dobratsch 2 days": The enjoyable descent leads from the 360° panoramic summit of the Dobratsch (2,166 m), first along its rugged karstic crags and later across wooded plateaus down to the traditional spa town of Warmbad Villach - a true best-of the Dobratsch Nature Park!

From the Dobratsch summit house, a short detour up to the Maria am Stein chapel (2,159 m) is worthwhile in the glorious morning atmosphere - start the day with a magnificent 360° panoramic view!

The descent begins with panoramic views via a rustic hunter's trail close to the edge of the imposing southern precipices of the Dobratsch. First we hike downhill through alpine meadows, soon through resinous, fragrant mountain pine fields. Occasional spur trails lead to the edge of the terrain and open up fantastic views. In the lonely Bärengraben, a short ascent follows up to the grassy Zehnernock (1,956 m). With a magnificent panoramic view of the Carinthian lake district, we descend through its grassy flank - the next wow experience! In the middle of the flank, a short detour to the "Gams-Gipfelblick" viewing platform is worthwhile for a look back at our breakfast summit and wonderful views down below.

From the final parking lot on the Villach Alpine Road, we hike across a gently sloping plateau. The panorama gradually fades and we immerse ourselves in the endless mountain forests of the Dobratsch. One last time we head out to the bold southern precipices, to the "Rote Wand" skywalk. After this thrill, a forest step leads down to the next plateau. The trail follows partly idyllic forest paths, partly forest roads. In a remote forest oasis, the Almgasthaus Hundsmarhof surprises with tasty cuisine - perfect for a break! We cross the quiet plateau on lonely forest roads until the first view of the urban Villach basin opens up at the edge of the terrain at the parking lot of the Alpine road. Wow!

On the final descent through the forest flank, the summit of the Tscheltschnigkogel (696 m) surprises us. Congratulations! Shortly afterwards, we hike through the hidden valley of the Maibachl, where several bathing pools bear witness to the popularity of this warm, temporary healing spring. Through the charming spa gardens, past the Warmbad Villach thermal baths, we reach Villach Warmbad railroad station. What a tour full of contrasts!

    Author’s recommendation

The Maria am Stein chapel is one of the two Marian shrines on the summit of the Dobratsch and was probably built by Bleiberg craftsmen or miners after a Marian apparition is said to have taken place at this location.

Warmbad Villach - The 25-29 °C thermal springs at the foot of the Dobratsch mountain have been used for bathing, relaxation and healing since ancient times. Today, a stylish thermal bath and numerous spa facilities invite you to regenerate.
