Rail & Trail "Amberger Alm - the most easterly hill of the Mirnock massif"
The flatter section into the Grabenkessel, to the hidden Zauchenalm (private), provides welcome regeneration at the halfway point. Windswept larches now increasingly appear between the thinning spruce trees. The last steep step leads us to the panoramic grassy summit of the Amberger Alm (1,832 m). Congratulations! A 320° panoramic view, the expanse of the Nockberge, Gerlitzen & Co, the Carinthian lake district ... simply magnificent.
We continue our enjoyable hike along the ridge through a beautiful alpine landscape to the unusual natural gem of Schwarzsee (1,792 m) - a lake on a ridge!
The descent begins on an old alpine path that crosses the steep forest flank of the Palnock down into the valley and leads us down to the mountain village of Amberg. High up on the mountain, the ancestors created a paradise for their families - several farming hamlets and, in the past, even their own elementary school tell of the farmers' creativity. A highlight: the Alpengasthof Walder will delight you with its traditional farm idyll and down-to-earth food.
After lonely farm roads, steep paths lead through the dense spruce forest of the last terrain level down into the valley to Weißenstein. The end point is the Weißenstein-Kellerberg train station.
Author’s recommendation
For connoisseurs: From the Schwarzsee, it is worth taking a short detour down to the idyllically situated Schwarzseehütte (1,750 m), which invites you to enjoy a delightful mountain break with regional delicacies and a panoramic terrace.
