A wonderful cultural hike through the lowlands of the sun-drenched valley flank of the Drau Valley: a lovely village idyll in Berg im Drautal, an edible landscape, atmospheric footpaths, the artistic toll mile, the quaint banks of the Drau ... - with plenty of time to enjoy! Optional: a refreshing end to the day at the Greifenburg bathing lake.

Berg im Drautal railroad station welcomes us directly on the banks of the Drau with friendly floral decorations, fluttering flags and small, well-tended parks in the immediate vicinity. Right at the start, a footpath with promenade flair leads us along the babbling Berger stream up into the village. After the Brunnermühle mill, a lovingly designed park with an "edible landscape" - a wide variety of fruit trees and berry bushes - invites you to take a breather and snack. Slow food in the truest sense of the word! At the bridge in the village center, it's worth making a detour to the picturesque fortified church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary - a real cultural gem! The short descent through the village settlement area gives a sense of proud village idyll and living tradition. Towards the Hotel Glockenhof, the landscape becomes lonelier again. There, a Kneipp basin invites you to revitalize body and soul. Afterwards, an atmospheric walk begins through the lowlands of the sun-drenched valley flank - a landscape full of harmony! Shady woods, rustic groves of trees and rural meadows alternate in constant ups and downs. After the fish pond, chestnuts line the path through the large meadow. Finally, Greifenburg Castle becomes visible. In Greifenburg on the main road, we cross the former toll bridge. The small toll house on the right still gives an idea of the old days. Now the artistically staged toll mile leads along the alpine Gnoppnitzbach stream through lush mixed forest to the Drau. The art objects made of stone, wood and metal stylize the interplay between nature and art. Thoughts such as "With or against nature?" come to mind. On the banks of the Drau, a barbecue area invites you to pause and watch the water - everything in the river. Downstream, we finally reach Greifenburg-Weißensee station.

(Take your time! The short length of the tour offers plenty of space to linger, enjoy and reflect.

A final detour to the idyllic Greifenburg bathing lake - a water highlight of the Upper Drau Valley - provides a refreshing finale. Opening hours and further information at: www.greifenburg.gv.at

For the observant: chestnuts only thrive at this altitude because the Ochsenschlucht gorge opposite brings in warm air from the south.
