Roadbook
The route follows the Carinthian state cycle paths, with additional signage to help you find your way at relevant points!
The sections in detail:
- St. Veit an der Glan "Fox Palace" – St. Veit an der Glan station
- R7 "Friesacherweg": St. Veit an der Glan station – Klagenfurt city center
- R4B "Lendkanal Cycle Path": Klagenfurt city center – Klagenfurt beach area
- R4 "Wörthersee Cycle Path": Klagenfurt beach area – Krumpendorf station
- return by train
The Fox Palace in St. Veit an der Glan is the starting point of this route. Also visit the St. Veit Museum and enjoy the atmosphere of the old town. The route passes the station to R7 "Friesacherweg," which you follow south through the railway underpass. On traffic-calmed residential streets, after crossing Völkermarkter Straße, you reach the almost continuously developed cycle path to Klagenfurt. Along the way, you also cycle past the energy exhibition site indoor swimming pool. The tour now leaves the built-up area of St. Veit an der Glan and mostly runs parallel to the Glan through meadows and fields. In Altglandorf, you cross the main road and turn right over a bridge across the Glan. After crossing the railway line, the likely only incline on this tour, the Blintendorf industrial park extends to the right. Continuing to follow the Glan, cycling is pleasant through the historic area around Maria Saal. Several historic highlights await here very close to the cycle path. Where the cycle path switches from the right to the left bank of the Glan, it is recommended to plan a personal detour to the "Herzogstuhl," "Carinthian open-air museum," and "Maria Saal Cathedral." The well-known sights are easily accessible from the cycle path with good signage. If needed, the route can be ended at Maria Saal station. The cycle path continues alongside the Glan, past Karnburg, towards Klagenfurt. It becomes more "urban," and after passing under the motorway twice and several sections without a cycle path, you arrive in Klagenfurt. The city entrance is well signposted, making it easy to find Klagenfurt city center with the famous "Lindwurm." Klagenfurt offers many worthwhile excursion destinations for those interested (including: Agricultural Museum Schloss Ehrental, Schleppe Brewery and Distillery World, Carinthian State Museum Rudolfinum, Diocesan Museum, Museum of Modern Art Carinthia, Happ Reptile Zoo, Klagenfurt Mining Museum, Botanical Center with Botanical Garden, Coat of Arms Hall, Minimundus with Planetarium), but even a simple stroll through the old town lets you relax after the bike ride.
From Neuer Platz, you now travel along the R4B "Lendkanal Cycle Path" towards Wörthersee. Be sure to allow plenty of time here for a refreshing swim and a ride with the Wörthersee shipping! From Klagenfurt’s beach area, you proceed with a beautiful view of the Karawanks along the north shore of Lake Wörthersee on the R4 "Wörthersee Cycle Path" to the destination, Krumpendorf station on Lake Wörthersee.
