Antike Steine für den mittelalterlichen Thron -
Seit dem Jahre 976 darf sich Kärnten (Karantanien) Herzogtum nennen. Da dieses Amtsherzogtum keinen Dynastensitz in Form einer Burg hatte und die amtierenden Herzöge nicht immer im Lande waren, entschloss man sich, ein mächtiges Symbol im Zollfeld zu errichten. Der Bau des „Steinernen Throns“ unter freiem Himmel symbolisierte die Anwesenheit des Herzogs in seinem Herrschaftsgebiet. Die Marmorblöcke dafür stammen aus der nahen ehemaligen Römerstadt Virunum. Am Herzogsstuhl fand im Mittelalter die Einsetzung der Landesfürsten statt. In einer feierlichen Zeremonie bestätigte der Herzog die Rechte und Freiheiten des Landes und nahm die Eidleistung des Adels entgegen. Wie dieses Ritual genau von statten ging, ist uns durch eine umfangreiche Schilderung des bedeutenden Kärntner Geschichtsschreibers aus dem 14. Jahrhundert, Abt Johann von Viktring, überliefert.
