An easy-to-ride e-MTB route on the southern Monte Baldo with panoramic views from the Adige Valley to Lake Garda. Varied with asphalt sections through beech forests and dirt paths.

This e-MTB tour on Monte Baldo, also marked as the "Violet Tour," is still hardly known.

We liked it for its ease, which never makes it boring, with picturesque views of the Adige Valley as well as Lake Garda. Paved sections through beech and oak forests alternate with more technical passages on unpaved paths through mountain meadows. We rode the route in June and experienced the wonderful bloom that only the Hortus Europae of Monte Baldo can offer!

    Author’s recommendation

Book the cable car ride with your bike in advance, as there are only a few rides in the morning. In high season, a free spot is not guaranteed.

    Safety information

When cycling in the mountains on a lightly traveled road, you will probably overtake more motorcycles than cars. Remember to keep right and watch out for motorcycles.

    Tips and suggestions

The "Sacrario del Monte Baldo" Memorial

The monumental complex was built in 1982 at about 1,000 meters elevation in Ferrara del Monte Baldo to commemorate the fallen of all wars born in the municipalities of the Province of Verona. In an amphitheater-like garden, 98 memorial stones made of white stone with the names of the municipalities of Verona are arranged. In the middle, a staircase leads to the altar. No dead are buried here.

    Monte Baldo Botanical Garden

At the Botanical Garden of Novezzina, only native species of Monte Baldo are collected. The recent renovation work has made it possible to fully enjoy this place again and admire the approximately 700 species discovered, collected, and planted by botanists over the past centuries for educational and research purposes.

If you visit the Botanical Garden of Novezzina, you should try the specialties of the Novezzina hut, made from local products. Their pasta with wild herb pesto is delicious!

    Bars and Restaurants

In the first part of the route along SP3 and SP8 and in the section bypassing Monte Baldo, there are several bars, huts, and restaurants. From Prada towards Malcesine, you will find many bars, restaurants, and farm stays.

    Roadbook

Take the cable car from Malcesine. Check the website in advance for the bike transport schedule. The route starts at the mountain station, where this route is marked as the "MTB Violet Tour."

Head north and immediately after the fence take the gently descending gravel road, which offers views of Monte Altissimo and some passes between the assistants and leads you to the asphalt road.

At the intersection, turn right onto the Strada Provinciale del Monte Baldo - SP3 and follow it downhill or on the false flat for about 15 km. The road is very pleasant to ride. It has little traffic and passes through meadows and forests.

You ride past Novezzina and its Botanical Garden until you reach the Al Cacciatore hut. Here at the junction with signs to Verona, keep right. The signs of the MTB Violet Tour are present but not very visible. Meanwhile, the road becomes the SP8.

Continue gently uphill, passing the "Sacrario del Monte Baldo" memorial, until you reach the Malga Ime signpost where you leave the SP8 and turn right onto a beautiful asphalt road through the meadows.

After some hairpin bends, continue uphill to the Malga Valfredda hut, where the asphalt changes into a light, stabilized path that is cemented in the steepest parts. Past the Colonei di Caprino and Pesina and some huts, continue towards Località Due Pozze. There are no technically very difficult sections except some steep but cemented descents. In this section, there are some cattle gates that must be opened and closed manually.

At the intersection with the asphalt road, do not turn towards the Due Pozze parking lot but keep left downhill towards Prada and San Zeno di Montagna. The road to Naole is not as well paved as the previous ones; there are even deep potholes to watch out for. You are on a road with car traffic, so watch out for cars and motorcycles – Due Pozze is very busy. Descend through small curves until you reach Prada Bassa; keep left on the SP9 and take the hairpin turn right at Hotel Il Castagneto (a large orange building) and continue downhill to San Zeno di Montagna.

Lake Garda becomes increasingly visible through the vegetation! Especially at one hairpin bend, there is a beautiful view of the lower Lake Garda! Shortly after, at the intersection with the main road, keep right towards Brenzone, first slightly uphill and then downhill. Continue downhill past the villages of Le Fasse and Fasor. From here, there is a magnificent view of the lake. Continue straight at the traffic light and keep straight to the village of Biaza, where I recommend turning right between the downhill houses to enjoy the passage through the center of Castelletto, one of the beautiful villages of Brenzone sul Garda.

The asphalt between the houses of Castelletto turns into cobblestones until you reach the Gardesana lakeside road, which you must cross to get to the lake cycle path. From here, ride about 13 km on the cycle path between the small harbors of the villages Brenzone, Cassone, and Val di Sogno towards Malcesine. Watch the pedestrian areas by walking your bike, and be careful in the bay of Val di Sogno as you will be riding against traffic.

At Malcesine Hospital, take the small road left to reach the Malcesine lakeside promenade. To return to the cable car, continue on Viale Roma, pushing your bike on the wide sidewalk. Walk up to the town hall and at Malcesine’s main roundabout, take Via Gardesana left to reach the second roundabout and Via Navene Vecchia, which brings you back to the cable car.
