This varied e-bike loop leads from Elbingerode through the impressive Harz reservoir landscape and combines scenic high points with exciting destinations. First, the route heads to the Königshütte Reservoir, whose peaceful setting invites you to pause for a moment. The tour continues to the Rappbode Dam with its imposing dam wall. Nearby, Harzdrenalin offers unique experiences and spectacular views across the valley.

Passing through Rotestein, the route winds through typical Harz forest landscapes toward Hasselfelde. There, the Köhlerei provides fascinating insights into the traditional production of charcoal and the region’s historic crafts. The Hassel Pre-Dam forms another peaceful section of the tour and offers beautiful views of the water and the surrounding forests. To round out the tour, the Königshütter Waterfall awaits—a rewarding natural destination on the outskirts of the village. Thanks to electric assistance, the route is also suitable for longer leisurely rides with several stops along the way.

    Author’s recommendation

    • Be sure to set aside some time for a Harz adventure at the Rappbode Dam. The attractions offer impressive views of the dam and the Bode Valley.
    • For a break, check out the shore areas at the Königshütte Dam, the Hassel pre-dam, or stop in Hasselfelde.
    • At the Hasselfelde charcoal kiln, it’s also worth visiting the exhibition on the traditional craft of charcoal burning.
    • This tour includes several stamp stations for the Harz Hiking Pin. These include the Königshütte Waterfall (HWN 40), the Rotestein (HWN 54), and the Stemberghaus Charcoal Kiln near Hasselfelde (HWN 60).

    Roadbook

    Note:

The tour includes longer stretches of forest trails, some steep climbs, and a few rougher sections. An off-road-capable e-bike, sufficient battery power, and an up-to-date offline map or GPX navigation are recommended.

    1. Elbingerode → Rappbode Dam / Harz Adrenaline

Start in the center of Elbingerode, ride along the castle park to the Felswerke stamp station, and continue toward Rübeland/Königshütte to the Königshütte Dam. You’ll pass the dam and turn left toward Rübeland; the route continues along “Die Lange” toward the Rappbode Dam.

At the Rappbode Dam, you’ll reach the dam wall with the Titan RT suspension bridge and the Harzdrenalin attractions. Plan a break here if needed.

    2. Rappbode Dam / Harzdrenalin → Rotestein

From the dam, continue southward on the signposted forest and hiking trails. The trail leads through varied spruce and beech forests and has sections with significant ascents and descents.

At Rotestein, you’ll find a striking rocky area offering beautiful views of the Harz mountain landscape.

    3. Rotestein → Köhlerei Stemberghaus

From Rotestein, follow the signs toward Hasselfelde and Stemberghaus. The route runs mostly along wide forest trails that are pleasant to ride on an e-bike.

The Stemberghaus charcoal kiln is one of the last remaining operational charcoal kilns in the Harz Mountains. It’s well worth visiting the information area or stopping for a break.

    4. Stemberghaus Charcoal Kiln → Hasselfelde

From the charcoal kiln, continue on to Hasselfelde. Follow the local bike and hiking signs; the route first leads through the forest and then across the open Harz plateaus.

In Hasselfelde, you’ll find shopping options, restaurants, and, if needed, a good place to recharge your e-bike (Hasselfelde Tourist Information during opening hours).

    5. Hasselfelde → Hassel Dam

Leave Hasselfelde heading southwest toward the Hassel Fore-Dam. The route takes you along quiet paths through wooded areas and over gently rolling terrain.

At the Hassel Pre-Dam, ride along the water and enjoy the peaceful, natural surroundings. Be sure to stay on the paths designated for bicycle traffic.

    6. Hassel Fore-Dam → Die Lange

From the Vorsperre, follow the forest trails toward the “Die Lange” ridge. This section includes a few longer climbs, but they’re easily manageable with e-bike assistance.

Once you reach the top, the route is mostly flat to slightly uphill.

    7. Die Lange → Königshütter Dam

Continue following the signs toward Königshütte and the Königshütte Dam. The route leads downhill through the forest, offering frequent views of the surrounding valleys.

At the Königshütte Dam, you’ll reach a particularly charming, quieter section of the tour.

    8. Königshütter Reservoir → Königshütte

Ride around the reservoir on the open trails and then head toward Königshütte. The descent is mostly downhill and is a great way to conserve some energy after the previous climbs.

In Königshütte, you’ll reach the federal highway and follow the local signs through the town.

    9. Königshütte → Königshütte Waterfall

From Königshütte, ride to the signposted Königshütte Waterfall. If necessary, park your e-bike in the designated parking area, as the final stretch may require walking, depending on the route.

The waterfall is idyllically situated in the forest and is a great spot for a short break.

    10. Königshütter Waterfall → Steinbach Valley

From the waterfall, follow the signs toward Steinbachtal. The route takes you along forest trails beside the stream and later climbs slightly again.

The Steinbach Valley is a natural, shaded section with a peaceful forest atmosphere.

    11. Steinbach Valley → Elbingerode

Stay on the marked trails in the Steinbach Valley heading toward Elbingerode. To finish, a longer but steady climb back up to the plateau awaits.

Take the road leading into town to return to the starting point in Elbingerode.
