Our skiing approach was a mix of offense and defense, given that the valley’s slope allows for smooth turns, but beneath the surface layer of fresh snow (3–5 cm), we encountered a layer of hard snow and compacted clumps from previous snowfalls.
Valea Albă offers wide, steep sections where we made flowing turns at progressively increasing speeds, but we also skied defensively, given that along the valley we encountered obstacles that could lead to serious consequences in the event of a fall.
The valley presented good conditions for skiing down, but required extra effort to maintain our trajectory and balance on the steep sections with hard snow.
As the most popular steep valley for both summer and winter, skiing down the White Valley requires good physical and technical skills, and the run is recommended only for those with extensive experience in controlling their skis in natural snow.
This post is intended to promote off-piste skiing in the Bucegi valleys, but it does not encourage individuals who do not have a firm grasp of the theoretical and practical concepts involved in tackling steep valleys (including reading and understanding the difficulty ratings of ski-mountaineering routes) to expose themselves to such sections while skiing.
