At the beginning of calendar spring, I skied down Priponului Valley (PD, S3, E1, 500 m) in the Bucegi Mountains.
The valley offered excellent conditions for skiing. The snow in the upper section was firm when I started my descent, but suitable for medium-radius turns. In the middle and lower sections, I made short turns and skidded turns on a mix of crusted snow and wind-blown, unconsolidated snow (approximately 5 cm).
A snow profile taken in the upper section showed well-consolidated layers; I did not identify any weak layers. However, in the lower layers, the crystals are frozen and large in size.— with Mountventure.ro.
This post is intended to promote off-piste skiing but does not encourage individuals who lack the theoretical and practical knowledge required to navigate steep valleys while skiing to expose themselves to such sections.
When accessing steep terrain during this period, we recommend taking weather conditions into account, as well as heeding the advice of mountain rescue teams and mountain guides.
