Impressive gravel route from Steinbach-Hallenberg over the legendary Königsweg up to the Rennsteig – with long climbs, fast gravel sections, and pure panorama. Over Wachsenrasen, Hohen Schorn, and the Hohe Möst, a wide view opens up to the Großer Inselsberg before the route leads back over Hoher Stein, Grenzadler, and the Schanze at Rennsteig. The final highlight awaits at Knüllfeld: a dreamy mountain meadow in the middle of the Thuringian Forest – original, vast, and made for gravel biking.

From Steinbach-Hallenberg, this gravel route leads deep into the heart of the Thuringian Forest along historic paths. Right at the start, the legendary climb of the Königsweg awaits, which feels like a natural ascent to the Rennsteig – rugged, challenging, and full of character.

Over the Wachsenrasen, the route steadily climbs up to the Hohen Schorn. Here the forest widens, the air gets cooler, and the paths become more pristine. Shortly afterward, you reach the Hohe Möst – a viewpoint that lives up to its name: majestic, vast, and impressive. The view stretches across the endless treetops of the Thuringian Forest to the distinctive Großer Inselsberg.

After this high point, the route continues to the Hoher Stein and then past the Grenzadler – one of Thuringia's best-known winter sports resorts. At the Schanze on the Rennsteig, the landscape is particularly spectacular once again: open clearings, fast gravel sections, and the feeling of rolling right through the great stage of the Thuringian Forest.

The return route is also varied. Along forest paths, it passes Veilchenbrunnen over to the dreamy mountain meadow Knüllfeld. Here the landscape suddenly opens – wide, quiet, and almost majestic. A place where one inevitably thinks: A wonder that there is no castle here.

This tour combines everything that makes gravel biking in the Thuringian Forest special: historic paths, long ascents, fast forest roads, quiet woods, and views that stretch far beyond the horizon.

Author's tip: Stop at Veilchenbrunnen and briefly park your bike to walk the few meters up to Hoher Stein – the impressive view is worth the detour.
