Selected alternatives for you
You can also cycle from Hiukka to the ridges of Pöllyvaara in winter. The outbound and return trips are on the ice along the beautiful shore bluff of Lake Sapsojärvi, and the climb to Pöllyvaara rewards with its views.

The winter cycling route starting from Hiukka beach in the center of Sotkamo is exceptionally beautiful, especially with the glittering snow in early spring. Along the route, you can see magnificent ridge landscapes. The route is suitable for fatbikes or similar bikes, but walking is also allowed.

Initially, you cycle three kilometers on ice-following, multiple-use tracks along the shore bluff, then detour to rolling pine forest terrain. The forest section has many ups and downs, some of which are challenging. Upon reaching the Pöllyvaara area, there is a circular loop of about five kilometers that can be ridden in both directions. If you start counterclockwise, you soon face a challenging uphill, but the difficulties from hills occur in both directions. The highest point of the route is Pöllyvaara, from whose summit you can see three different lakes: Sapsojärvi, Sotkamojärvi, and Kiimasjärvi.

There are no official rest stops along the route, but there are great spots to stop and enjoy your snacks.

The flat ice section to Rytilahti and back is about 6 km.

    Safety information

The route crosses the main road once.

The downhills are quite fast in places.

    Tips and suggestions

There are also ski tracks going in the same direction on the ice of Sapso, so stay on the lane intended for cyclists.

There are plenty of services in the center of Sotkamo, for example cafés.

From the Sports Institute area, you can access the Leivolankylä winter cycling route near Sotkamo center and Hiukka.

The summer mountain biking route also goes through ridge terrain in its early section.

    Roadbook

The Hiukka-Pöllyvaara winter cycling route is marked in the terrain with blue and white winter cycling signs, and the circular section of the route can be ridden in both directions. The route is regularly maintained with a snowmobile and a grooming machine.

The winter cycling route starts from the beach of the Hiukka outdoor area. Initially, the route goes on the ice of Lake Sapsojärvi along the edge of the Hiukka ridge section, all the way to Rytilahti, about 3.2 kilometers. Rytilahti has a parish camp center. From its shore, you move beside the sauna onto a yard road leading to a larger main road. After crossing the road, the route continues over rolling pine forest terrain and descends to the wilderness-like shore of Lake Pitkälampi. From the end of the lake, the route climbs steeply to the intersection of the Pöllyvaara loop, where there are clear guide signs.

In the route instructions, the circular section is described to be ridden counterclockwise. The beginning of the circular section is easy and relatively flat, but ahead Pöllyvaara offers a challenging and long climb. The ascent is about 50 meters, after which you are almost at the highest point. On the right side of the route, there is a large gravel extraction site, beside which the route climbs a bit higher.

From Pöllyvaara, the route continues down a long straight and fast descent, after which it turns left into younger pine forest passing through kettle holes on narrow ridge crests. There are also some slightly more technical sections on this part. Gradually, the terrain around flattens, but continues as pine forest towards Juuvinmäki, where there is one of the route's starting points. The route returns through rolling forest terrain towards the end of Lake Pitkälampi, where the circular route ends and returns back on the ice trail leading to Hiukka.

    Equipment

The route is designed for fatbikes.

Fatbikes, electric-assisted or without, can be rented for example from Vuokatti SkiService.

In winter excursions, remember to dress in layers.

When cycling in freezing weather, cold usually creeps first into fingers and toes. So it is advisable to equip yourself with thicker gloves and proper winter boots. And if you fall off the bike into deep snow, gaiters and snow locks on pants and jacket are a nice addition.

Also, a helmet is an important gear in winter cycling!
