The smallest mountain range in Slovakia - Busov
Selected alternatives for you
The winter circuit leads through the smallest mountain range in Slovakia – Busov, along the Slovak-Polish border with an authentic borderland atmosphere. The route from the village of Frička passes along the border and over the peaks of Čierťaž and Dzielec, partly passing through Polish territory and then returning to the starting point. It is a sport-oriented trail with significant elevation gain, suitable for more experienced cross-country skiers, backcountry, and ski-alpine enthusiasts.

The Busov mountain range is among the least known and also the smallest mountain ranges in Slovakia. It is located in the northern part of the Bardejov district, right on the Slovak-Polish border. Despite its inconspicuousness, it offers beautiful meadow passages, views of the Polish side of the Beskids, and an authentic atmosphere of a remote region. Part of the route is occasionally groomed for winter trekking from the Polish side during the winter season.
Route characteristics:
- Ridge winter trail
- Open meadow passages (more challenging conditions in wind)
- Border section between Slovakia and Poland
- Less busy mountain range – peace and minimal tourists
Author’s recommendation
The route is also known as a sporting event – a winter cross-country ski race, but outside of organized events, it can be completed individually as a demanding winter circuit.

Tips and suggestions
Busov is the smallest mountain range in Slovakia, but in winter it looks majestic. The ridge provides views of the Polish Beskids and northeastern Slovakia. The region has a strong Rusyn history and has preserved an authentic rural character.Roadbook
The route starts in the village of Frička (approx. 520 m above sea level), from where it leads towards the state border. It gradually ascends to the Busov ridge and continues over the Čierťaž peak and the Polish peak Dzielec. In some sections, the route runs directly on the border, very close to it, and partially through Polish territory, with views towards the Polish area above Tylicz.
The return follows a loop via Polianka back to the village of Frička.
