Keimiö skiing
The ski route around Keimiötunturi offers fell scenery, snow-laden trees, and the cleanest air in the world. The views of the Pallastunturi fell crown the experience!
Click your skis on and head towards the Keimiöjärvi wilderness hut. The trail through the forest is easy skiing. From the hut, continue admiring fell scenery across the lake and mires towards the Mustavaara kota (hut). Near the kota is an old reindeer herder’s cabin, a historic sight. The cabin formerly served as a wilderness hut but is now locked.
From Mustavaara kota, there is only a short climb to the slope of Sammaltunturi, where the view approaches perfection. Trees are coated with snow, and the Pallastunturit fells rise against the blue sky. Everything around is pure white. This fell boasts the world’s cleanest air by measurement!
On Sammaltunturi’s slope, enjoy wide fell landscapes for about a kilometer before the trail descends briskly back to the winter forest. On the return trip towards the Keimiöjärvi parking area, you can still stop by the Tunturikeimiö ski café.
For those preferring a flatter trail, start from Hotel Jeris across the lake towards the Särkijärvi lodgings. On the lake, the view is crowned by Keimiötunturi rising on the shore and the rolling Pallastunturit fells on the horizon. Check the opening hours of the hotel and the Särkijärvi lodgings’ cafés online.

Safety information
The daylight hours are short in winter. Bring a headlamp.
Getting wet in the frost cools you quickly. Be especially careful not to wet your feet.
Weather in the fell can change quickly and visibility can deteriorate rapidly. Prepare for cold and rain; in spring and autumn, even winter conditions are possible, even if it feels warm when setting out.
Mobile phone coverage is not available on all hiking routes. Reception is generally better in higher, open areas than in other terrain. Download and activate the free 112 Finland app on your phone before setting out. Note that the battery drains quickly in cold conditions.
