Worthwhile stops & detours:
Rheinberg's town center is well worth a visit. Around the market square with its historical flair, visitors can discover the Gothic town hall from 1449, town houses from the 16th/17th century and the imposing ancestral home of the Underberg family (1869-1874), which was built as a residential and commercial building.
The Geleucht on the Rheinpreußen spoil tip is a regional "highlight" of a special kind. If you would like to visit the world's largest work of mining art, continue along Römerstraße to the traffic circle and follow the sign there. Did you recognize it?
The "Geleucht" is an oversized miner's lamp - as impressive from below as it is from above. The ascent is also worthwhile: skywatchers can enjoy views deep into the Ruhr region and the Lower Rhine.
The Hallenhaus on the Norddeutschland spoil tip is the second landmark worth seeing on the tour - and a good opportunity to rest your legs. Directly at the parking lot is the Himmelstreppe. If you manage to climb the 359 steps to the top, you can enjoy another phenomenal view and the peace and quiet before embarking on the last stage of the circular tour.
The Kamp Monastery is a beautiful end to the tour. Founded in 1123, it was the first Cistercian monastery in the German-speaking world. The lovingly landscaped terraced garden is reminiscent of one of the most famous German gardens. It is not for nothing that the prestigious spiritual and cultural center is also known as "Sanssouci on the Lower Rhine".
Gastronomic and leisure tips along the way:
Underberg outdoor pool - cool off in a listed building.
Built in 1954 and regularly renovated, the pool is one of the most popular outdoor pools in the region thanks to its prime location in the city park and family-friendly facilities.
