The circuit around the Karwendel mountains by mountain bike – better known as the "Karwendelrunde" – is an absolute must for ambitious mountain bikers. With around 2,000 meters of elevation gain and about 70.0 kilometers, this route is challenging but rewards with unforgettable impressions.
This unique mountain bike route begins with a ride through the nature reserve "Riedboden" and continues to Scharnitz in Tyrol up to the entrance of the Karwendel valley. Always along the Karwendelbach and wide alpine meadows, the steep climb to the Karwendelhaus now begins. After a stop at the Karwendelhaus, it is only a few meters to the Hochalmsattel, before descending down numerous switchbacks to the small Ahornboden. There, a short break is possible. Next, the Johannistal leads to Hinterriss, and after a short flat section, the next climb begins to the "Vordersbachau" and a stream crossing. Now follows the last steep climb up to the Vereiner Alm, where you can reflect once more on the collected impressions. The forest road from Vereiner Alm leads down to Mittenwald, the starting point of the route.
Author’s recommendation
For those wanting more challenge, it is possible to pedal from the small Ahornboden via Ladizalm (1573 m) to Falkenhütte (1848 m) and then descend via Hohljoch (1794 m) into the Laliderer valley. From Hinterriss, you then follow the classic Karwendelrunde again (additional 25 km, 530 m elevation gain, approx. 1.5 – 2 hours).
