The Allgäu lake landscape is absolutely unique in its variety. South of the town of Kempten, the last Ice Age created a hilly moraine landscape, which is traversed by the Iller and dotted with many small and larger lakes. Against this backdrop, cycling routes are great fun – and especially in summer, it is worthwhile to take breaks more often and refresh yourself in the cool water. That is no problem on this route: from the Alpsee, it goes to the Rottachsee, past the Sulzberger See to Kempten. If that's not enough, you can cycle back along the Iller and pass the Niedersonthofner See on the way back.

    Author’s recommendation

Those who want to shorten the route a bit can cycle from Graben to Kempten on the Iller Cycle Path and return to Immenstadt by train.

We start our route at Alpsee Camping in Bühl and turn right from Seestraße into Trieblingser Weg. At the end of the street, we keep left, then turn right after about 250 m onto the cycle path along the country road and follow it to Immenstadt. At the upcoming roundabout, we take the third exit. At the bend in the priority road, we keep left, then take the second exit at the roundabout and follow the Lake Constance-Königsee cycle path to the right over the railway crossing to the Konstanzer Ach. We do not cross it now, instead keep right and cycle past the playground and sports field. Now we turn left and cross the tributary of the Iller.

We are now on the Iller Cycle Path and cycle along the picturesque riverbank to the first junction. Here we pass Iller and B19 and continue to Untermaiselstein, where a detour to the dairy is worthwhile for connoisseurs. We pass through the village, turn right at the junction behind the village, and follow the road to Rottach. At Rottachmühle, we turn left towards Häusern/Martinszell. We do not cross the Iller but keep right before the bridge and follow the road past Widdumer Weiher to Ried bei Ottacker. Here we turn right.

Now begins the 4 km long climb through the village Ottacker to Moosbach. Once there, we can pay a short visit to the Rottachsee and enjoy a cold refreshment for our feet. In Moosbach, we keep left and follow the road for another 3 km. After Untergassen, we turn left onto a gravel path and complete the last kilometer uphill before reaching the highest point of our route.

The path leads us back to the road. We follow this for another 400 m and then turn sharply left down the next gravel path to Sulzberg. At the large intersection in the village, we take the Kempten street that leads us directly to the next lake on our route: the Sulzberger See. The outdoor swimming pool is located on the right shore of the lake.

We keep left and turn right after 300 m. Past the business park, we follow the path and take the underpass of the motorway. Then we turn left past a farm and cycle over Au to Graben. We do not turn right into the village but cross the Iller to the left. Since we want to cycle back along the riverbank, we keep left again, enjoying the nice cycle path, with Waltenhofen to our right.

At Rauns, we turn right twice and come back to an asphalted road. We finally turn into Edelsbergstraße and keep left again at the end of the road towards Oberdorf. On the way, we pass Herzmanns. There we take the underpass of the B19, then turn right and about 500 m further again right into the underpass. We cross the railway tracks and are now at the shore of the Niedersonthofener See. With the railway tracks to our left, the cycle path here offers a great view of the lake.

Thus, we reach Oberdorf. We turn right, cross the tracks and immediately continue right. One last time we have to cross the tracks and then turn right to the Iller. Now, we are back on the cycle path along the riverbank, which leads us back to Immenstadt. At the end, we cross the Konstanzer Ach and cycle along the main road through Immenstadt. We pass two roundabouts and follow Missener Straße to Bühl am Alpsee to Alpsee Camping, our starting point.
