Stage 03 Mur Cycle Path Murau - Judenburg
Stage three along the Mur takes us, well-rested and ready for new adventures, by bike from Murau via Scheifling to Judenburg, where the highest planetarium in the world – also one of the ten most modern planetariums in Europe – awaits us.
Through the narrow stretches of the Mur Valley at the foot of the Niedere Tauern, we are accompanied by the Murtal Railway – a historic narrow-gauge railway that is still in operation today. At Frauenburg, we are greeted by the legendary ruins of the castle of the same name, and in Sauerbrunn/Thalheim, by Styria’s oldest mineral water spring. There is also plenty to see in Judenburg, including the tallest town tower in Austria, which houses one of the most modern planetariums in Europe. For those young at heart, a visit to the Fairytale Park in St. Georgen ob Judenburg is a delightful stop along the way.

Roadbook
We leave the historic town of Murau, with its castle and the Brewery of the Senses, via the railway district, where you’ll find the station for the nostalgic steam train, which still runs here in the Mur Valley. From here, the Mur Cycle Path curves to the left and leads us to the main road, where it joins the accompanying cycle path.
Just before reaching Triebendorf, the cycle path veers away from the road and crosses the Mur River to the right at the Triebendorf stop. From here, we continue at a leisurely pace through Frojach to Teufenbach, where we reach the Raddörfl – a popular meeting point for cyclists on the Mur Cycle Path. Just above the village, you’ll find the ruins of Steinschloss, the highest castle ruins in Styria, as well as the castle of Alt-Teufenbach.
In the village itself, we turn left at the first main road by Gasthof Nemeth, then right again after the Raiffeisenbank at the municipal office. We pass by the church and continue cycling towards Scheifling. This stretch takes us through a lovely forest on a pleasant gravel path. After a few kilometres, the church spire of Scheifling comes into view. The village was once an important crossroads of ancient trade routes – a fact still reflected in its appearance today.
Just after the church, we turn left at the crossroad, go under the main road, and reach the left bank of the Mur via a pedestrian bridge. We also cross the Murtal Railway once more before continuing to Lind near Scheifling, where the natural swimming pond Freisambad awaits. Here, we turn right and continue our ride alongside the Murtal Railway towards Unzmarkt-Frauenburg – the official end (or beginning) of the Murtal Railway line.
Our journey then takes us to St. Georgen ob Judenburg. For those who are still young at heart, the local fairytale park is a delightful place to stop and refresh. Nearby, we turn right and continue our ride at a relaxed pace between the railway and the Mur River.
Before long, we reach Thalheim and continue along the left bank of the Mur towards Judenburg, our stage destination. Along the way, we pass under the motorway bridge, grateful that the hustle and bustle of daily life feels far behind us now.
Before entering the town, there’s one last short climb – as there has been here and there throughout this stage – but we’re rewarded in the charming historic centre of Judenburg. The old town is particularly well preserved and full of character. Its landmark is the town tower, nearly 76 metres tall, offering fantastic views over the Aichfeld region. Construction began in the 15th century, and the tower was used as a watchtower to spot fires early and respond in time. Its current appearance dates back to the great fire of 1840. Today, 50 metres up, the tower houses one of the most modern planetariums in Europe.
Right in the heart of the historic old town, the Puch Museum invites visitors to explore key milestones in vehicle development. Legendary bicycles, motorbikes and cars awaken memories of the global successes of the “Puch” brand, which played a major role in motorising the Austrian population.

Coordinates
Equipment
Tips when reporting an emergency – Answer these six WH questions: What happened? How many people are injured? Where did the accident happen (are there GPS coordinates)? Who is reporting the incident (callback number)? When did the accident happen? What is the weather like at the site of the incident?
The right bike: a touring bike or city bike. Racing bikes are not recommended. Breakdowns can occur ‒ and they rarely happen right outside one of the many service points. That’s why it never hurts to ensure you have a basic kit with you comprising key tools and accessories! It’s sensible to bring a replacement hose and/or repair kit, adjustable spanner, air pump, brake and gear cable and a screwdriver.
