A picturesque and not too demanding Soča cycling route from Tolmin to Solkan that almost entirely follows the Bohinj railway line.

The Soča cycling route takes us past natural and cultural sights of the middle Soča valley. The route starts at one of the most beautiful natural spots in the Tolmin area, at the confluence of the Soča and Tolminka rivers. Continue past Most na Soči with its interesting archaeological site, Gorenji Log and the pagan shrine Babja jama to Avče, where the extremely rare Mediterranean fern Adiantum capillus veneris grows. Descending towards the medieval town of Kanal, pass by the "Kanal Lurd" to the central square with the Neptune fountain, then past the church to the old town core Kontrada with the Gothic house and the Riko Debenjak gallery. Cross the famous two-arched stone Kanalski bridge and, possibly before the ascent to Gorenja vas, visit the local cheese dairy or the Keramost gallery on the right bank of the Soča. Even the last section of the route between Plave and Solkan will not leave you indifferent, as you will enjoy views of Sveta Gora, admire stone galleries – masterpieces of the builders of the Bohinj railway – and the Solkan bridge.

    Author’s recommendation

Also suitable for a winter route. The Plave-Solkan section is family-friendly.

    Safety information

The section between Gorenji Log and Avče is partly gravel in individual sections, suitable only for trekking and mountain bikes; it is advisable to descend on foot towards the stream.

The route runs partly on regional, but mostly on local roads.

    Tips and suggestions

    • Possibility to return to the starting point by train: railway stations Solkan, Plave, Anhovo, Kanal, Avče, Most na Soči. https://potniski.sz.si/dobro-je-vedeti/s-kolesom-na-vlak/
    • You can refresh in local inns (Tolmin, Most na Soči, Kanal, Deskle, Ložice, Plave, Solkan).
    • In summer, you can cool off in the Soča river along the route.
    • The confluence of the Soča and Tolminka rivers is a venue for numerous festivals and other events in summer.

    Roadbook

The route starts in Tolmin at the confluence of the Soča and Tolminka rivers and continues along the cycling path beside the lake to Most na Soči. At Most na Soči, turn onto a side road towards Tolminski Lom and cross the Idrijca River. After a short, steep climb, reach the settlement of Drobočnik, turn right and head towards Gorenji Log. Here begins a somewhat more demanding part of the route, which takes us along a narrow track to Avče. This section between Gorenji Log and Avče is partly gravel, suitable only for trekking and mountain bikes; the descent towards the Vogršček stream is better done on foot. From Avče descend via a local road to Kanal, where you can drive over the famous Kanalski bridge to the right bank of the Soča River and turn towards the settlement of Gorenja vas. Continue through the settlements of Anhovo and Ložice to Plave. At the crossroads near the bridge over the Soča, head towards Vrhovlje (Goriška brda). Shortly after the ascent begins, the path branches left towards the Soča. From there, follow the cycling path right beside the Soča and along the Bohinj railway line to Solkan.
