Author’s recommendation
Since the reopening of the Tholey Abbey in October 2020, 37 newly designed church windows can be admired there. Three of the choir windows were designed by Gerhard Richter, the most important living artist of our time.

Roadbook
We start on the Saar-Oster-Höhen-Radweg with the red Saarland logo via local roads towards Dörrenbach. Soon we leave the outskirts of St. Wendel behind and are led left from the main road onto a cycle path along the Blies in the directly adjoining Oberlinxweiler. Shortly afterwards we encounter the road network again. Here, the Saar-Oster-Höhen-Radweg runs in the opposite direction across the entire Saarland to the Saar near Saarlouis. But we turn left always heading towards Dörrenbach. Just a few hundred meters further, we leave the road to the right onto the driveway to the Keimbach and Billerborn farms.
The landscape gets more and more beautiful and the path climbs the ridge between the Blies and the Oster valleys. The often typical 100 meters of elevation in Saarland must be overcome but, as always, the magnificent panoramic views compensate for the effort. Even more, we enjoy the descent to Dörrenbach. But beware: shortly before the village, we encounter the Saarland cycle path with the yellow Saarland logo branching off to the left, which we follow towards Freisen.
For many kilometers now, we cycle on beautiful cycle paths through the idyllic Oster valley. Several sections have been newly upgraded as part of the Saarland cycle path, allowing the scenic charm of this valley to be enjoyed to the fullest. Occasionally, it goes a bit uphill and downhill, but the landscape compensates for everything. The Oster was completely renaturalized several years ago and now meanders repeatedly very close to the cycle path with its clear water through the idyllic valley. Passing Werschweiler, Niederkirchen and Marth, we reach Osterbrücken.
The route continues still beautifully, but now somewhat above the Oster via Seitzweiler and Haupersweiler to Oberkirchen. The Saarland cycle path leads us through the old town center, where several inns invite you to linger. At the town exit, we always follow the signs towards Freisen and pass under the old viaduct of a former railway line, already sensing the joy we will have when we soon look over Oberkirchen and down into the Oster valley from up there.
The pillars of the railway viaduct made of natural stones rise breathtakingly high over the town. The railway line was converted into the Fritz-Wunderlich cycle and hiking trail and now we may enjoy the wonderful view.
Continuously gently ascending and with many panoramic views, we cycle to the former Grügelborn station. At the junction of the Saarland cycle path, we follow the Weiselberg cycle path branching off to the left. Almost imperceptibly, we have now climbed the ridge once more and now enjoy the descent into the town. But shortly after there is another short ascent to Roschberg. Immediately after the town, we leave the Weiselberg cycle path branching off to the right and continue straight ahead following the signs to Baltersweiler. There follows a very beautiful section through meadows and fields and it goes steadily downhill - what more could you want! Through Baltersweiler it goes via quiet local streets and then along the railway line past the Dörrwiesmühle completely traffic-free to Urweiler.
We are just before our destination St. Wendel and now unfortunately have to ride on the main road for a few hundred meters. Suddenly our path turns right onto a small footpath towards St. Wendel city. We are led back to the Wendelinus cycle path parking lot behind the train station via shortcut paths.
To conclude this eventful day route, a visit to the St. Wendel pedestrian zone with its rich gastronomy offer and the Wendelinus Basilica is recommended.
The route is continuously paved except for a few shorter sections. A gravel section down to Dörrenbach is unfortunately not in very good condition but is passable by touring bikes with sufficiently wide tires. The route length of 39 km and the total of 370 meters of elevation can still be managed well by experienced children with appropriate multi-gear bikes.
