In the south of the island of Hiddensee, on the Gellen, stands the Gellen cross light, built in 1905. This is also called "Süderleuchtturm" because of its location on the island and "Kleiner Leuchtturm" because of its small size of only 12 meters high. It was built of iron segments painted red and white on a stone base. A transverse marker light is a fixed light that flashes uniformly in the dark and shines in a 360-degree radius. The light of the transverse marker beacon is used by coastal shipping as an approach signal for the Gellenstrom fairway from the Baltic Sea towards Stralsund.
