Follow in the footsteps of the quirky gendarmerie inspector Simon Polt and visit the filming locations of the crime series. The 52-kilometer Polt Trail takes you to one of the most beautiful wine landscapes in Austria. It connects the world of vineyard hills and wine cellar lanes with six villages on the wide valley floor. In many places, there are charming views across the national border to Znojmo, but also far into the Weinviertel, all the way to the peaks of the Alpine foothills.

The Pulkautal valley in the northern Weinviertel between Retz and Laa an der Thaya is the model for the literary "Wiesbachtal". This is where Inspector Polt solves his cases and where the filming locations for the TV movies can be found. The marked numbers are intended to make it easier to find the filming locations.

Moderate inclines alternate with flat stretches. The route is divided into several sections, which can be ridden individually or combined as desired, depending on your mood and fitness level.

    Jetzelsdorf – Peigarten – Pernersdorf – Karlsdorf – Pfaffendorf – Jetzelsdorf

A good starting point for this section is the Weinkirche in Jetzelsdorf, where a farm road branches off to the north from the main road. Then turn right across the railroad tracks and take the first left onto the path. The Polt Trail now follows the Pulkau River toward Peigarten. Through the wine cellar lane in Pernersdorf, the trail turns north toward the state border. Now head toward Karlsdorf. Once you reach Pfaffendorf, look for a sign that takes you right into the heart of the film’s action—specifically, to Café Dundler (Filming Location No. 1). If you’re in a hurry or already tired, you can take the federal highway from here directly back to Jetzelsdorf.
But there’s a more enjoyable option: Return to the Polt-Weg, which then turns north and joins the familiar route at the North-Kreuz.

    Jetzelsdorf–Auggenthal–Haugsdorf–Alberndorf

The trail leads from the Weinkirche in Jetzelsdorf to the Bauer family’s next filming location (Filming Location No.2). The winery has become the very setting that depicted the fate of Karl Fürnkranz’s daughter in a terrifying and harrowing way.

In the neighboring community of Auggenthal lies Filming Location No. 3 —there, in the film, Polt spent a long
and very cold night watching the Fürnkranz family’s farm from the Auggenthal village chapel, where a violent argument had apparently taken place.

In the center of Haugsdorf is another filming location, the stately rectory (Filming Location No. 4) from the novel “Heaven and Hell.” In its garden, the cheerful parish cook tips a full soup tureen over the head of a guest from Vienna.

The next section requires a short loop and turns left into the Alberndorf wine cellar lane ( Filming Location No. 5). Today , the wine cellar lanes have become quieter and more peaceful because modern winemaking demands precisely controlled aging methods.

After an absolutely essential detour to the Hutberg in Haugsdorf, the path leads quite
steeply downhill through the wine cellar lane. Here you’ll find the Reingruber family’s wine press house ( Filming Location No. 6), which in the novel *Polt muss weinen* serves as the domain of Karl Brunner, a winegrower who, along with other upstanding men, is suspected of having killed a monster in the village.

    Alberndorf–Untermarkersdorf–Hadres

But back to Alberndorf: here, the Polt Trail leads past the wine press houses of the Grillentrift into the Untermarkersdorf wine cellar lane to the next filming location, No. 7 —the Himmelbauer Cellar, called “Höllenbauer” in the film. After the last wine press houses, the trail leads into the vast hilly countryside, close to the state border, and to the next filming location, No. 8: the Lösswand. This is where, in the film “Blumen für Polt,” the tragedy of Willi unfolded—he fell to his death here.

Once you reach the hilltop near the border, it’s worth taking a break at the beautiful Marian column, also known as the “Urlauberkreuz” (Vacationers’ Cross), filming location No. 9. From here, you have a unique view across the broad Pulkau Valley, stretching far into Lower Austria.

The Polt Trail continues for a few meters before turning left and leading us into Kellergasse Hadres. Right at the beginning, hidden behind Büchschen, is Ignaz Reiter’s wine press house ( Filming Location No. 10), which was purchased by Simon Polt.

At the end of the wine cellar lane Hadres, near the main square, is House No. 5 belonging to the Haupt family— Filming Location No. 11—where Polt’s apartment was located.

    Seefeld-Kadolz-Mailberg-Obritz

A good and scenic starting point is the Hubertus Chapel in Hadres. The path winds westward along the border between the vineyards. Soon you’ll reach Seefeld-Kadolz, where the large building of the former Eselmühle— Filming Location No. 12—catches your eye . Not far from there , you’ll reach Polt’s police station (Filming Location No. 13); this is where Polt ended his career as a gendarme because he could no longer bear the conflict between the law and justice.

In Seefeld, the next section comes to an end, and the Polt Trail turns south, leading to the Kopp Inn ( Filming Location No. 14), which has been permanently closed for quite some time.
In the films, this inn—where time has stood still for decades—appeared as the “Kirchenwirt,” and it was also where the film crew celebrated the halfway point of production after the most important filming had finally been completed.

The next view from above then takes in the Pulkautal valley and the long, narrow wine cellar lane in Obritz (Filming Location No. 15).

Incidentally, the very first scene of “Polt muss weinen” was filmed in Obritz’s wine cellar lane, filming location No. 16.

    Public transport

The nearest train stations are Guntersdorf and Retz.

    Directions

From Vienna, you can reach your destination via the A22 in about an hour. A few kilometers past Guntersdorf, the Pulka Valley comes into view. At the next roundabout, take the first exit. However, there are also some charming little detours to choose from—it’s worth taking a look at the road map!

If you’re traveling from the Czech Republic, there are several border crossings to choose from: Kleinhaugsdorf, Laa/Thaya, and—by bike or on foot—Mitterretzbach, Seefeld-Kadolz, and Hardegg
