Pilgrimage route (Route 12)
Past wayside shrines, field crosses and chapels - the starting point of the route is the wine village Dettelbach with a centuries-old pilgrimage tradition.
The route starts in Dettelbach at the Main ferry. Parking is available here. At the town hall, turn into Würzburger Straße. The cycle path follows the 'Franconian Marian Way' to Effeldorf. Past mills it goes to Bibergau via Effeldorf continuing to Rottendorf. Here you follow the railway line, always slightly uphill, to the district Rothof. Through extensive and fertile highlands you reach Euerfeld. From there it continues to Seligenstadt. The cycle path now leads down to Neusetz with the Catholic filial church Mariä Himmelfahrt and St. Kilian, Kolonat and Totnan. From here it goes on to Neuses am Berg with the onion church towers of the two almost identical churches St. Nikolaus (Catholic) and St. Nicolai (Evangelical). The meditation path 'Bible, Wine and Wisdoms' leads through the vineyards. Wonderful views of the wine island offer themselves.
It is now only a few kilometres to Dettelbach. Visiting the pilgrimage church "Maria im Sand" forms the perfect end to the route.
A shortcut can be taken via Schernau.
Those travelling to Dettelbach by train can join the route in Effeldorf.
Author’s recommendation
Along the way there is not always an (open) place to stop, so be sure to take enough water and provisions for a picnic with you.
The route is only conditionally suitable for racing cyclists, as there are also some gravel paths.
