Why not reach Ticino by bike by crossing the Alps? This national route, particularly varied, passes through several regions and is divided into eight stages. The final stage crosses the Mendrisiotto area, connecting some of the region’s most significant locations and offering a pleasant mix of lakeside landscapes, vineyards and historic centres.

The route starts near Swissminiatur in Melide, a well-known park featuring 1:25 scale models of Switzerland’s most iconic buildings, monuments and means of transport. Continuing south, you reach Bissone, where the village square is dedicated to the renowned architect Francesco Borromini.

After Bissone, the route follows the main road along the lakeshore. The next section leads to Capolago – Riva San Vitale, the starting point of the historic cogwheel railway that climbs to Monte Generoso (1,701 m above sea level). The first inland section, around 11 km long, follows the course of the Laveggio river and offers a pleasant flat stretch. The route then continues with gentle ups and downs through Mendrisio, the main town of the region.

Heading further south, the landscape opens onto the vineyards of Ticino’s largest wine-growing region, accompanying cyclists towards the border area. The route ends in the border town of Chiasso, the southernmost point of Switzerland and the destination of National Cycle Route No. 3.
