Monte San Giorgio ist eine Station der “Grand Tour of Switzerland“

Touristisches Highlight: Monte San Giorgio​

Von seinem Gipfel geniesst man eine herrliche Aussicht, und wer an ihm kratzt, fühlt, dass hier einst Meeres- und andere grosse Tiere lebten.
Der Monte San Giorgio ist der Schweizer Saurierberg und hat seit 2010, mit der UNESCO Erweiterung zum italienischen teil des Berges, als transnationaler Ortschaft an Wert gewonnen. Dieser Berg hat ein wahrhaft reiches Innenleben: Der knapp 1100 Meter hohe Monte San Giorgio im sonnigen Süden des Tessins ist seit dem 19. Jahrhundert ein Mekka der Fossilien-Wissenschafter und seit 2003 Unesco-Welterbe. Tausende von versteinerten Fischen und Meeressauriern bis zu sechs Meter Länge wurden hier von eifrigen Paläontologen bereits zutage gefördert. Aus gutem Grund: Denn vor 245 bis 230 Mio. Jahren befand sich hier ein 100 Meter tiefes Meeresbecken. Heute erhebt sich hier, am Südende des Luganersees, der Monte San Giorgio wie eine Pyramide – in seinem Innern prallvoll gefüllt mit Fossilien aller Art. Man schlendert entlang den Südhängen des waldigen Hügels durch die Rebberge, bummelt durch das idyllische Meride oder lässt sich verwöhnen in den Grotti des Mendrisiotto. An den zahlreichen Stellen der Ausgrabungen wurden rund 80 verschiedene Fischarten und 30 Meeres- und Landreptilien entdeckt. Zudem fanden die Forscher Hunderte von versteinerten wirbellosen Tieren und Pflanzen aus der Mittel-Trias Zeit vor 245 bis 230 Mio. Jahren. Das vom Tessiner Architekten Mario Botta umgebaute und erweiterte Fossilienmuseum von Meride zeigt eine Auswahl von versteinerten Tieren und Pflanzen aus dem weltweit einmaligen UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe des Monte San Giorgio.
